Graduate Nurse with Passion for Writing

Published

*This is my first post, sorry if it's in the wrong section or something...

I am a 22-year-old male nurse. I graduated in May 2015 and I was very excited to take the NCLEX and begin my career as a nurse, when disaster struck.

Soon after graduation I started having some autoimmune health issues. Long story short, I have not been healthy enough to take my NCLEX. I won't physically be able to start working for at least four months. All I am allowed to do at the time is volunteer in a hospital, which I will begin in two weeks. I have been looking into the possibility of writing. I understand that this is not something that will not make me rich over night and that is not what I am aiming for.

Since I am going to have a lot of downtime I wanted to begin to pursue my passion in writing. I have some obstacles and I was hoping you would be able to help me figure out how to overcome them.

First, I have no professional training or experience in writing. I have always had a passion for it, and even considered majoring in journalism. Is professional training a necessity?

Second, I unfortunately have not been able to start my nursing career. I really would like to focus my writing on nursing. Is it possible to write on nursing if I am willing to do the research required to provide entertaining, accurate information? Are there any specific topics that would be good for me to write about since I have minimal experience?

Third, being a novice, I have no real connections in the world of nursing or the world of writing. I am not sure where to begin in this endeavor and I was wondering if you have any suggestions for where to start.

Fourth, due to the fact that I am currently unemployed and I have a lot of hospital bills, I have a very tight budget. I'm not sure how much this will affect me in starting this journey, but I figure it will have some impact.

TL;DR: I really want to begin a career in writing. I understand that I probably won't make any money for quite a while, but I want to do it at least as a serious hobby for now. I have minimal experience in nursing and writing, so I was wondering where I should begin.

I understand these are some big barriers, but I am willing to do whatever it takes to break them down. I am pretty open to writing about any topics related to nursing (for now.) Thank you for taking the time to read this. I appreciate all of your help and suggestions!

Start by writing scholarly articles.

The articles on Allnurses are perfect examples of how NOT to write a scholarly article. Later this year, I plan to use my free time to write a scholarly article about writing scholarly articles and post it here on Allnurses.

The stuff here is so slanted, I'm surprised my monitor doesn't slide off of the desk.
