Grad RN and Single Mom

Published

Hi everyone.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma here and I would like some advice. I am single mom and a new nurse and I recently accepted the position in CVICU working overnight. CVICU is my dream job. I wasn't thinking straight when I accepted the overnight offer and now I am deeply regretting it. My situation is that I literally have no support from anyone. I have a nanny to watch my daughter overnight but I can't afford daytime care so I would be the one taking care of her during the day. My daughter is 9 months old right now. I won't start the nurse residency program until June 22 and I won't be working on the unit until some time in August. I have worked night shift before and got really sick from the sleep deprivation.

Should I call the nurse manager and decline the offer? Do you think they will consider giving me a daytime position? Should I work 6 months overnight and then switch to day? Please no rude comments. Just looking for some advice.

I honestly don't see how you can care for a toddler during the day and still get enough sleep to be safe to work.

If you do call and have to decline, be sure to pitch it that you can't get daycare for the little one after all. I doubt they will let you come in on days when they were looking for a nightshifter.

I guess other opportunities will come along. It was a job fair and I told them I have open availability but I should of specified :( thanks for your feedback
