Rank upon commission in Army?

Hi, I just found this site and have already learned so much by browsing the current topics of discussion. I am applying to the Army CRNA program (via direct accession) for 2007 and I have a meeting with my local Army healthcare recruiter tomorrow. Unfortunately, I have already learned in my short dealings with the healthcare office that I may not always get the most accurate information, though I believe they have tried their best. Here is my question: I know that most new nurses are direct commissioned as 2nd lieutenants but how much civilian experience is required to be direct commissioned as a first lieutenant (assuming this is even possible)? At the time of accession to active duty I will have roughly 3 years of professional nursing experience. Is it possible to be commissioned as a first lieutenant with this amount of experience and would having a CCRN certification make a difference in my initial rank? Thanks in advance!

I am glad you asked. I have the same question. I have 17 years of experience in the world. Where does that put me?

Good luck. I have a friend who just transfered to ICU to begin her experience with goal of CRNA via army.

Unlike the 'real' world, the military operates on its own. Civilian experience counts very little on your rank.

Please contact the military nurse recruiter. When I was considering the Army Reserves last year, I had 11 years as an RN and an MSN and they would have brought me in as a Captain. This year because I will have completed an advanced practice nurse, I could enter as a major (O-4). I am prior enlisted though.

They told me it was roughly two years of civilian experience to one year of military experience. However, I would definitely ask the nurse recruiter because they will have the most up to date information. Good luck and thanks for your service.

I work with air force nurses and civilian experience definetly counts. 3 years civilian experience would probably put you at first lt. I know 5 years gets up in as a capt in the air force.

I came into the USAR Nurse Corps direct commission as 1LT in 2003 w/5.5 yrs civilian RN experience. Sorry, I don't know the cutoff btwn civilian RN exp & 2LT to 1LT. I do know +7 yrs civilian RN experience will make an applicant eligible for CPT upon entry to USAR Nurse Corps.

LOL, I'm eligible for AMEDD USAR CPT BRD this May, however this Friday I will take oath of office for regular commission as 1LT AN. I'm hoping my adjusted DOR will have me eligible for the 2007 AMEDD USA CPT BRD.

Anyway, good luck!
