Hey everyone,

I'm also going through the process of applying for the July selection boards. I've been a nurse for almost 4 years, graduated from an ADN program in 2013 and just finished my BSN in December of 2016. I'm hoping to stick with mental health specialty, which I have about 2.5 years experience in as both a staff nurse and a clinical supervisor. Currently working on getting board certified (studying, obtaining CEU'S). Just wanted to hear from some of the other folks out there who are also applying and see how things are going. Just had the medical evaluation/eye exam done earlier this week and now I'm waiting to hear from DoDMERB regarding approval. My recruiter said we'd talk about the CNO interview after I was approved.

Looking forward to hearing from you all :)

Hey there! I just had my Chief Nurse interview today & I am so relieved that it's over! 🙈 It wasn't bad at all, but just like any other interview I was a little nervous going into it. Now I feel like I can finally breathe a little bit. I'm also scheduled to go to MEPS next week...apparently all of the slots for DoDMERB were filled so I have to get my physical this way. That's awesome that you plan to do mental health! Super interesting specialty. I plan to do critical care in the future, but who knows where I'll end up. I'm excited! 😊

I'm sure having the interview over with has helped to ease some of your anxiety! I know that each CNO is different but do you mind sharing the types of questions he or she asked? I'm eagerly awaiting the results from DoDMERB so I can move forward with the process and finalize my application, if I'm lucky there won't be any additional obstacles. Best of luck to you with critical care, hopefully you'll be able to pursue that since that is where your interest lies. Let us know how MEPS goes for you, I've heard all kinds of different things. ;)

It's always something like:

-why do you want to join the AF?

-are you okay shooting a gun?

-what is your family plan if you get deployed?

-do you want to make the AF a 20+ year career?

-what are you short term and long term career goals?

Thank you! Yes, just as jfratian said, it's questions just like that. My chief nurse also asked me what I would bring to the Air Force, why I wanted to join, how I would adjust to military life, if I understood the PT requirements, and she also asked me the mission statement of the USAF so make sure you look over that and the core values!! Honestly, it started out as more of an "interview" with those questions, but eventually turned into more of a conversation about the Air Force. It wasn't bad at all! Of course you'll be nervous, but just be confident and you'll do great! :) I'll be sure to let ya know how MEPS goes!!

Jfratian,

Can you share some insight into the need/role of mental health RN's in the Air Force currently, as well as common duty stations? I included Asian pacific bases on my dream sheet and I was curious about the likelihood of going overseas as a first duty station. I spent about a year in Korea with my spouse and loved it over there.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

In the AF, mental health RNs are largely used for inpatient mental health care. There are 3 bases for them. Those are Travis (Sacramento), JBER (Anchorage), and SAMMC (San Antonio).

Outpatient mental health clinics are largely staffed by providers (such as psych NPs) and technicians.

As a mental health RN, your chances of getting Korea or Japan are pretty much nil. The only way to get those locations would be if you get used as something other than a mental health RN (such as med-surg or general outpatient clinic nursing).

I'll be applying for this upcoming selection board. I had a few questions.

What does FY mean and why is the year 2018? If the selection board is in July, won't we be in COT in the fall? Also, I have my Air Force Recruiter interview coming up soon. Does any one have any tips for me?

Please don't post the same question to multiple threads.

Ok, well it would have been helpful if FY was defined in the opening paragraph to those who do not have the background knowledge on the military.

I read the previous that I commented on and thank you for the tips regarding the interview. I wonder how many applicants will be applying and how many spots will be open for this year. I read in previous threads that it ranged from 35-50 spots and almost 300 applicants.

My application has been submitted! Now we wait :) Does anyone know about when we'll find out if we're in or not? Usually mid-August, right? I've seen different dates when looking at various threads. I'm assuming it really depends on when the board comes to a decision though.
