How would an RN go about volunteering aboard one of the Hospital Ships? I've been on USNS Mercy and Comfort's web site and they mention volunteering via a "non-governmental organization (ngo)." Not too clear on how to do that or how to find a NGO - didn't find much on a subject search.....

I have not personally called this number, but it was a number I saw posted. It is not really what you are asking about, but maybe someone there can point you in the right direction...

American Airlines is taking doctors and nurses to Haiti for free. Please call 212-697-9767.

I've volunteered 2x on a "grey hull and white hull"....prior to going Active duty. Once with Project hope on the USNS Mercy (I HIGHLY DON'T recommend them, infact I can't stand them..PH) and once with Aloha Medical missions out of Hawaii......Aloha is fabulous, sooooooo laid back and nice, they are really flexible with YOUR timeline, unlike project H- (on my mission with project Hope, 6 of the RNs left early we were so disappointed, but some people really like it.....now, I believe it is really competitive, unlike Aloha).

The catch here folks is YOU pay for your transportation and etc.......so, it may cost a few thousand...but it is wonderful.

Google, Aloha and see where they are conducting missions (non religious) this year.....I also went to Myanmar with them after Nargus......unbelieveable experience
