Army/Military Nursing

Hello to all,

I've perused over this site and have found some very valuable information. I am interested in Army Nursing, although all services seem to offer certain perks.

Does anyone know how much of a guarantee a new graduate has in what base they will be assigned to? I know the Navy can guarantee in writing where you go, but not too sure about the Army?

I am really interested in going overseas (Germany or Korea) as my first duty station. How likely is this?

I am a new graduate nurse, but aspire to get my FNP degree. Is any one service more likely to need FNP's (i.e. I can go to graduate school sooner?)?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Athena, feel the need to add...(I have an MPH in health admin., but don't find that very marketable, ugh!)

Hey, after looking at your bio-pretty snappy, I have to ask this...I'm a complete newby at all the military health services information, but just in terms of how military compares to non-military nursing environment-simple things like 'massive' overtime- is it available at a facility like yours, or not, or what? I will have a fair amount of debt to pay off from my online nursing educational decision making I'm doing now, and well, I thought I would ask and see if this is a possibility or not?

I don't know if you know about the Army's training of nurse anes., or not, but I notice their school is ranked in this one discipline like second in the nation, in that last 'dubious' ranking, so I was wondering if you may have a contact or would know someone to contact from within their organization, and preferably not a healthcare recruiter? This would really help me out a great deal.

Forgive me for telling you this, but a good buddy of mine is an MD in the Army, but he really stressed going to a non-Army branch. We're both single and of course he said the ladies over in the Air F. were vastly more numerous, besides the living conditions at least over in Iraq (late 2003) for my buddy were pretty much a make-shift, non-a/c'd environment, dirt floor, one-weak light bulb, and the AF guys got to bask in the a/c, and other sundry details. This may seem petty, but it just gives me a rudimentary idea as to what to expect. Does any of this sound familiar or not?

Thanks again for your input!

Tallone, welcome to Allnurses! I can not answer all your questions, but unless the Military has changed a lot since I was in, you will not get any extra pay for working overtime... That being said, there are some pretty good bonus incentives right now for nurses going into the military.

As far as the Nurse Anesthetist Program, I am also interested in this areas of nursing. There is a time of service prerequisite for the program, I think it is only one year, but other factors come into play also. This would not really be holding you back, as pretty much all the civilian programs I have looked into also have min. years experience required for admittance.

As far as getting your State license goes, It is my understanding that you will be required to pass the NCLEX and hold an unrestricted State license prior to being commissioned into the Military.

Hope this helps, I know it is a big decision to make

Good luck to you!
