Got an offer but nothing in writing

Published

Hi everyone ... I just received a much-wanted job offer but have nothing in writing. The nurse manager and I shook on it, and she advised me that HR would be in touch next week.

When next week came, I didn't hear anything so I contacted the nurse manager again. She responded that she must have misspoke and that the job would just be an agreement between us. Human resources will not get involved until after I graduate in a few months and pass the NCLEX.

Should I be worried? I trust her but not the economy. Am I reasonably safe in stopping my job search? I was so thrilled to be offered this job, but I don't want to put my eggs in one basket.

Specializes in Nursing Professional Development.

You are not safe. Until it is in writing (usually through the Human Resources/Nurse Recruiter), it is not official and anything can happen. That Nurse Manager might not even be working there by the time you graduate!

Try to keep in good graces with that Manager ... but keep looking elsewhere. If you get an official somewhere else, you'll have a difficult to choice to make -- but that's better than being unemployed.

Specializes in Med-Surg/urology.

I'm already licensed but i had a similar experience to yours. After what seemed like a bunch of interviews(followed by many rejections), at the end of my last job interview, the nurse manager mentioned to me at the end of the interview, "you would be a great addition to the unit. HR should be in contact with you by Friday" . Well, Friday came and went. I followed up with the manager- no response. At that point I figured maybe they decided to hire someone with experience. But this week I got an offer :) so my point is, a verbal offer is great but if you feel uneasy, just keep looking around.

Thanks for your advice, llg and Nurse2bKimberly. I really appreciate your responses. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed about this job but keep looking. I really, really want this position, but I don't want to find myself heartbroken and unemployed if it falls through.

Specializes in Leadership, Psych, HomeCare, Amb. Care.

You were tentatively offered a position, that may or may not materialize.

Remain hopeful, but keep looking, just in case.
