I will graduate in December. I returned to school as a second career student with the goal to pursue Midwifery. I intend to work for several years as an RN first, as my DH will be doing grad school himself during that period.
It is doubtful, as this stage that I will be able to secure aposition as a new grad in L&D, Mother/Baby, or the like. I also have a gut feeling that I would like some experiance in another setting first...thinking ED, but not familiar enough with the skill set of each specialty. I have Doula and CBE experiance. I may add that I eventually am interested in the possibility of doing a homebirth practice, and I lean toward ED because I think it may give me some experiance handling a wider variety of issues.
I would appreciate anyone's opinions about experiance prior to Midwifery. What are some of the areas would be helpful and what skills are available there that aren't (or not in a large enouh volume) in women's health?

I think the only other area in a hospital setting would be the ED, you will get a more broad base experience. You will deal with pregnancy, miscarriage, ectopic, std's, pelvic exams, and emergency deliveries. You will deal with women of all ages and cultural backgrounds. I have been a nurse in the ED for 4 years, start a CNM program in the fall :)
