go to nursing school abroad or not?

Published

I live in Connecticut and Im taking my pre requisites classes in a local community college for the RN program.

but is very competitive, there's a wait list and Im just a average student. I don't have amazing grades to get

in the program, so I would be on the wait list.

however, Im from brasil. I could go to school there, its 4 years for a bachelor(bsn) degree and I would enroll

right away. Im a us permanent resident(green card holder) so I would have no immigration problems to come back.

I hope to work in either ny or Connecticut and hopefully someday in Florida.

I read here that I would have to go trough the cgfns to evaluate my transcripts, but how long would that take?

other questions. will my bsn degree be recognized as a bsn nurse in the us?

will I need to take the toefl test even if I had done college English classes here in the us? and how hard is the

toefl test?

will I be able to go grad school to get a master degree after all this is done?

is there any chance of my degree be denied here and being worthless?

thank you.

you can advance your degree in nursing from anywhere in the country call 877-266-2520

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Having a green card is an advantage however you will need to protect it if you leave the US to study as it may be taken as abandoning residency if you do not get a remit permit.

If you train outside the US then it usually takes anywhere from 4-12 months to get licensed depending on state you apply to and what their requirements are for foreign trained

I will be careful about my green card. I ll be coming home every 6 months and if I still face problems with that, I ll apply for student permit that allows me to stay out of the country for as least 2 years.

I would probably apply for a license in NY first, since is 15min for where I live.

has anybody here done all these steps and became a RN here in the usa without any problems?

Why don't you give the Board where you want to be licensed a call and ask someone about the process? They should be able to give you an idea about the time frames involved.

yea, maybe i ll just give a call to ny board to ask about the time frames.

but, will my 4 year bsn degree from brasil be recognized as a bsn nurse in the us? does anybody know?

is not worth for me to go there for 4 years and then they say its consider a diploma here..

you should visit the commission on graduates for foreign nursing schools website: http://www.cgfns.org/

here some information from their website. i hope this helps.

credential verification service for new york state

who is this service for?

the following health care professionals educated outside the united states who wish to practice in new york state:

  • registered nurses
  • practical nurses

  • physical therapists
  • physical therapist assistants

  • occupational therapists
  • occupational therapy assistants

what does this service do?

the credential verification service for new york state verifies the authenticity of foreign educational and licensure credentials. in order to perform this verification you must complete: an application, a credential verification service for new york state authorization for verification of academic records/transcripts form and a credential verification service for new york state authorization for validation of registration/license form. a form is needed for each post-secondary (tertiary) school and the licensing authority that issued your first license/registration.

cgfns then directly sends each post-secondary (tertiary) school and licensure authority the authorization forms you completed for verification of your attendance and licensure. the verification documents must be mailed directly to cgfns from the schools and licensure authorities. you may not forward these documents to us.

for practical nurses only, proof of completing secondary school is required and this documentation can be sent from you to cgfns.

after we receive verification documents from the school and licensure authorities, cgfns prepares a report and sends it to the new york state education department. this report only outlines the authenticity of the documents submitted to us. it reports only on the authenticity of your official documents, and is not an analysis or determination regarding your education’s sufficiency or whether you have met new york’s licensure requirements. you do not receive a copy of this report. check your status at https://www.cgfns.org/cerpassweb/login.jsp and if your report has been sent, your status will display “report issued”.

the new york state education department evaluates your credentials. you apply directly to new york state for licensure. send new york state licensure forms to the new york state education department, not to cgfns. the new york state education department will contact you with more information about your eligibility.
