After having pontificated about this case at some length last week, I've been shocked into silence. It's been snowpocalypse here, and we were without power for a few days. Imagine my surprise when I was reconnected to the world this evening to find out Jahi had been moved, trached, pegged and is reanimated, apparently. It is like something out of a rather famous Mary Shelly novel. Frankenstein was my first thought, and the meme above "mostly dead" was my second. It is utterly amazing and horrifying. And IMO, a complete fabrication. As my kids would say, "pics or it didn't happen." No, I don't really want to see ghoulish photographic evidence. I agree with other posters that it is not coincidental that there are no videos of this miracle girl on CNN running every 15 minutes. If it were true, It would be broadcast everywhere around the world in living color. My guess is the gofundme take was slowing down.

I agree they came out and said that she "might not make it through the day" and the contributions for her care slowed. I hate to think that......but I am being pushed by the family to believe nothing else.

This is so far beyond the realm of what is right and onto the macabre. It is inconceivable that they can truly think this is OK. I am terrified that this is going to set up an unrealistic firestorm on this subject and this is the beginning of a public circus for public donations for some quick cash.

Back in my EMT days, we used to tell our instructor that asystole was a stable rhythm. We got to feel smart and our instructor had yet another good reason to roll her eyes at us. Win-win.

Lol you took the words right out of my mouth... I was thinking the lawyer might come out and say "well the doctors are optimistic now that she's in a stable rhythm!"

The oddest thing happened tonight - I was vegging out all alone while dh and son were out and watched an old re-run of "The Good Wife". One of the storylines was a rock star had a motorcycle accident and was brain dead according to one doc, who was explaining to family/lawyers. Another doc left the room and Juliana Marguiles (The Good Wife ;) ) followed him out and asked him why he left. He told her a story about giving that same speech to a family years ago regarding a patient who was in a persistent vegetative state and then the patient woke up 21 years later. He said he never gave that speech again. "It might be a one-in-a-million shot".

I shouted at the tv - PVS and brain death are not the same thing!

So yeah, our society at large doesn't understand this. But they might now.

This poor child. Breaks my heart.

Julianna Margulies died in the first ever episode of ER and then miraculously came back to life, too. That has nothing to do with this thread, but that's what this comment made me think of.

The comments on the facebook page are unbelievable. People think that "now that she's getting nutrients she will continue to improve." :banghead:

If you consider miscellaneous fluids oozing out of miscellaneous places an improvement, then I guess I skipped that class... :eyeroll:

I looked at the Facebook page and read some of the comments out of curiosity and was left speechless. There's so such magical thinking, it's ridiculous. I'm an atheist and I feel embarrassed for God; being tied to so much ignorance. There's praying for a resurrection x_X. One person thinks that Jahi will bring "Testimonial report on how Jesus works." You can't make that stuff up. Gobsmacked...

:nailbiting:

Wow. Edema. Weeping. Bloating abdomen as a result of GT feeds entering a necrotic gut. Not sure I believe this latest story. Me thinks the empty gofundme account was getting low (if you read the gofundme ToS one can drain the account without depleting the running total amount raised)

Perhaps Shark Dolan put the gag on loving uncle Omari and his twitter. If she was improving there would be photo evidence. Serious desiccation of a corpse and a mandated autopsy what a hot mess.

Who thinks the corpse is still home?

That's right - she tried to kill herself. Loved that show.

Back to the subject. :)

Older children and adults can indeed get NEC. There's a form of it seen in neutropenic patients called typhlitis, where the infection occurs in the cecum. Quite a few years ago we had a cluster of cases in adolescent males who all ended up in the PICU.

If, and it's just a big IF, they have PEG'd this child and are feeding her, as long as the GI tract remains intact (assuming it is) the feeds will follow gravity. If they're maintaining VAP precautions and have the head of the bed elevated to at least 30° it will eventually reach her rectum, picking up bacteria and fungi along the way. It will ooze continuously and every time they put her flat to clean her up, it will drain out of her mouth; the ventilator could then blow it down into her lungs. It really is only a matter of time before she arrests. Time that diminishes every hour. Whether there will ever be any confirmation that she has actually become pulseless is anyone's guess.

If she is at home wouldn't this become a health hazard and put the siblings at risk?

Isn't the whole scenario putting the siblings at risk? Medically, psychologically & emotionally...perhaps CPS needs to be involved. The infection control practices to handle this now Petri dish of a former human being....
