Gift for a preceptor?

Hello all!

I have been a Nurse for 3 years now and I started a new job.

I have had three weeks of precepting on the new floor and I would like to get the three nurses who precepted me a gift (something small to show appreciation)

Even though I am pretty experienced for this floor, I still feel like they really helped me!

What should I get them?

I dont know if they like coffee, as I never see them drink it. I was going to do that, but then decided to come here for help.

As I didnt get a chance to really know these wonderful ladies, I am just not sure what would be appropriate to get them....

Any ideas?

Are there any other nurses on the floor who you could ask? They're more likely to know what these 3 ladies would like than any of us here.

Having said that, I think gifts of food are usually appreciated. How about some home-baked cookies? Make a couple different kinds and hopefully at least one will be something they like. Even if they don't like cookies, most likely they'll appreciate the thought. Or bring cookies AND fresh fruit -- give them a healthy option too, just in case.

how about a $5 gift card to starbuck's -- or the volunteer espresso stand in your hospital's lobby? accompanied, of course, by a nice card telling each nurse how much you appreciated her and how much you've learned from her. or the home-made cookies are a nice idea, too. whatever you do, make sure you include the card with a personal note, because that will be treasured for years.

Gift cards are always a good option, but I never feel anything more than a nice "thank you" card is necessary... especially from students since I know they don't have any $$$ right after their preceptorship! My last student gave me a $15 gift card to Target and a nice card.

I just finished a 10 week externship. The hospital has a system in place for recognition - a pin that goes on the name badge, a little extra bonus, and recognition from the management staff. I wrote a personal e-mail for each of the nurses that I felt had really invested in me. Thank-you e-mails to managers, with the nurse CCed, would probably go a long way.

i got my preceptor an iTunes gift card, since she really liked to download music and always had her iPod with her at work... and of course, a nice card and a bunch of compliments to the director of the floor.

when i was in practicum tho, all the students on the floor with me went out to the dollar store and got a big basket and FILLED it with goodies, just small snacks, gum, cookies, goldfish, popcorn, crackers, chips, candies, etc.... but enough so everyone could have some, and it was overflowing with snacks... wrapped it in a big bow and left it on the nurse's desk. it was huge hit.

i think the true way to a nurse's heart is thru the tummy :)
