Hey guys and gals,
Here's the senario: Super grateful patient gives his doctor $1000 and tells him, more or less, to spend it on the staff for the enrichment and enjoyment of their lives.
The doc ain't buying "lets buy a new pulse-ox". He really thinks we deserve something nice for ourselves.
Probably 40 RNs, 20-30 aides, 6 clerks on our floor.
I've got quite a few ideas... but nothing that really stands out as a great idea.
So I turn to you... ANY IDEAS? =)

Cash. lol I'm guessing cash wouldn't fly so how about a gift certificate to a local spa?! That's a nice treat not everyone can afford. It would be particularly nice during the holidays.

Why not pay it forward and donate to medical research?
Or ..... World Vision.... Red Cross.... UNICEF ....
I think that'd be doing something nice for yourselves. No greater sense of accomplishment than to help others.
However, if it's to be literally spent on each individual on the unit ....
Divide the amount by the number of people, give each their share with a stipulation that half goes to a charity of their choice and the other half they spend as they desire.
Winners all round! :)
Then again, the amount divided by the number of people ........ Hmmmm. wouldn't exactly buy an island! :)
So ... as a group for all to benefit .......... chocolate! LOTS of chocolate! lol
ENJOY! :)
At 75 people, that's only about $15 a person. Not much of a spa trip.
There might be people in your workplace that need charity. Maybe someone's spouse lost their job or some other catastrophe?

nice gesture from the pt, but how come the doctor can keep the money and if nurses get monetary gifts from patients, we are required to refuse it due to ethical grounds?
I'm sure you can donate to a clinic to get some new equipment or couch or something.

One word: Starbucks! Nah...J/k
Either charity, savings (in case an employee hits hard times), or gift cards
Make it a gift card and it should cover a manicure. A gift card to a general store ala Target might also be a good idea. Granted it isn't much when broken down but it was a really nice gesture and everyone can use a little treat. :)

sorry to be a downer, but it crosses an ethical boundary for the MD to accept a gift and he/she knows it.
