i've been a supervisor at a snf/sub acute facility for a little over 2 years. Until May, when I left for mat. leave, I was whole-house supervisor on weekends. In July, while on mat. leave, I was asked to take a newly created night shift whole house supervisor position, which I did. I've always gotten excellent evals, and in my current position/shift, I've made positive changes. I have a Bachelor's degree. On Monday, the previous unit manager was fired. The Director of Nursing told me Tuesday morning, at which time I told her I was very interested in the position, that I wanted The Director of Nursing told me Tuesday morning, at which time I told her I was very interested in the position, that I wanted to get further involved with management. She said "interesting" multiple times, she thought I had to work night shift b/c of the baby and that I liked it, to which I responded that while that was the case in July, my schedule was wide open, since my DH is now a SAHD, and that while I liked my position, I did not enjoy the off-shift. The conversation ended with her telling me to sign up when the position was posted in the break room, which I did.

Since then I am the only person who has signed up, but I have been told by the persons themselves that the DON has asked 2 people to take the position-a PT girl who has never worked on the unit in question, which is busier with a higher acuity w/ no supervisory experience, who's been a nurse for less than a year, and a woman who's been a nurse longer than me but who's only supervisory experience is since I left for mat. leave-she's who I trained to cover for me, she's been at the facility for less than a year and has a 2 year degree. I've also found the position posted on careerbuilder.com. i should also add that while the previous mgr was on fmla, i filled in for her for 6 weeks. the position is salary with better benefits than my current position. I have not heard anything one way or the other. My DH thinks I should call Mon. and ask whether I am being considered or not. what do you think?

if i don'get this position i am leaving-why waste my time if i have no future? i've turned down other opportunities

I should add that the DON asked the other two girls on Monday, before I expressed interest.

I would ask the DON how the search for the position is going and if you was still a possiblity for getting the job. You could maybe at that time ask her if there was any questions that she may have for you to help her in making the decision. I think it would show your continued interest in the position. I have a suspicion of this also. I never wanted to be night turn forever. If this is the case DH thinks I should tell the DON that I'm looking elsewhere. I will look elsewhere if I've been pigeon-holed into not receiving a promotion

rnto, just be careful. Sometimes, a step up is a step out. I would NOT mention that you will possibly look elsewhere. It WILL come back to bite you in the butt!

i had a similar situation happen. there was a job opportunity posted and i had not applied as i did not like the hours... i was approached by my boss about the opportunity and i told her i would be interested iif it was different shifts with that position but not way it was posted. She made the job to the shifts I wanted and the girl who wanted the position did not get it, she was mad and had been telling everyone that she was going to quit if she did not get the position... guess what she didn't quit but her childish behavior has probably prevented her from getting a promotion at this place again!

I still had to go through the application process, just like everyone else.

She asked them before you expressed interest.........i would hold out and let the process unfold. Where i work position changes take FOREVER.

I agree with ebear. I was a some what new LPN and they basically turned me in to a ADON overnight it seemed. I was a CNA / Med Tech that went LPN. At the time they didn't have an opening for me so they said i could be the ADON since the old one was leaving and i had time in the facility. I took the job not realizing that i was walking myself out the door. Seven months later they came to me and said the facility decided a RN should be in the spot of the ADON.

Here's the thing i was called in to the DON's office and i was told about the RN / ADON idea. She looked at me and said. You did a great job as the ADON and said that i got along with everyone and everyone respected me and i was fair to a lot of thing's i shouldn't of been.

And that i have been with them for a long time but as it stands right now she didn't have an opening for me to go back on to the floor and that she was really sorry. I was showed the door mind you i had been there for almost 5 yrs.

Moral of the story be careful because your way up can be your way out. Start looking for a new job now don't wait. Its easier to find one when you already have one... These are my thoughts use them as you wish

I don't see how a unit manager position is a promotion over being a supervisor. It's the opposite in most buildings around here. The supervisor "outranks" a unit manager. Your degree doesn't really have anything to do with it. I'm thinking some of the other posters are right....she doesn't want to lose you from the 11-7 shift. I was a nurse manager and applied to be the supervisor. The DON told me she couldn't lose me since I did such a good job as the nurse manager. I told her I was hoping for upward mobility and if she wouldn't give me a different position, I would have to go somewhere that would. I did...after 2 days the DON called and told me she had made a huge mistake and would I please come back and be the supervisor. I did. It worked out well for me. Make sure you have another job before you turn in your resignation.

thanks for the advice everyone. I will be calling the DON tomorrow. CapeCodMermaid-glad things worked out for you. I too am hoping for upward mobility. I can't afford not to have a job lined up before I resign. We're living paycheck to paycheck as it is! I have a few possibilities through networking already.

I've often felt that as supervisor I had more responsibility than the unit manager position, but it is what it is. I'm not considered management, but the Unit manager position is, and is therefore salaried with all kinds of bonuses, etc.
