Advice Wanted!!!! PLEASE!!!

  1. I have been a LPN for about 2 1/2 years now. I have been working in LTC. The first place I worked I left due to poor Resident care. I have been working for my current employer PT for 7 months now. I work 7 out of 14 days in pay period. From day 1 I told my DON that my preferrable shift was 10-6, but I accepted PT 2-10 because I needed so badly out of the other LTC facility. The DON told me that when FT was available she would give me 1 more day so that I could have benefits. Since then they have hired another 2-10 nurse and gave this one FT, even though they knew I needed one more 8hrs for FT. Which really irritated me. This new nurse that they hired has been trouble from day 1, she is a compulsive liar and butt kiss. She has been caught in soooooo many lies it is unreal. She had been a doctors office nurse for many years and when she works she plays CNA more then nurse. I was given a paper from the DON stating that when this new nurse is on she is in charge. But the deal with that is she does not do the nursing responsibilities and passes them off to me. But proceeds to tell the DON that all I do is sit in the office not doing nothing. When this nurse is on the floor by herself, if a cath change is due to be done she will not do it and will save it for the next shift which is normally me. WHY? Because she does not know how to do then. Everytime she tries they normally fall out. I could keep going on and on about her. Anyway, there is now a FT position on 10-6. I am the next one in line for seniority and i told them in person and in writing that I would like those hours. But..... they the facility called in a nurse that they know lives in this small rural town for the position?????? When I asked the administator why??? she said because she had heard I was applying at other places, which is not true at ALL!!!! Oh and the best part, this nurse they called in. She recently had her kids taken away from her because her hubby was doing meth around them. OMG But they would rather hire her over me. I know they are in the process of doing a criminal background on her, 6 days waiting for it to come back. LOL Oh another thing, a friend of mine works in the kitchen and her mother is the dietary manager. She said her mom told her that she over heard the DON and ADM talking about weeding me out. This place is a joke. It just infurates me. Can't sleep, annoyed and just is not worth it anymore. But what really bothers me is I KNOW I AM A GOOD NURSE. What would you guys do? Because I am not about to kiss anyones butt for that job, I am good enough to cover their 10-6 hours now but not good enough to hire for the postition. HELP NEED ADVICE!!!!!!!

    My advice: leave.

There has to be too many other places to not get treated that way. And on your way out, explain why you are leaving.

Why donate minutes or hours of your life to a lying idiot? You will not get what you are asking for. Move on, you owe her nothing.

Start looking for a job now. And be prepared to quit when they sit you down to let you go, which sounds like they are intending to do. In the mean time document document document. Keep a personal diary. Have people witness the things that bother you. In the end get out.

Your LTC sounds like a few of the private LTC's I've worked in.The first lesson you've learned here is if you have not gotten a promise in writing you may as well forget a bout it...2nd-if you are a relatively new employee and you are working with a bunch of nutjobs that seem to have taken a dis-like to you-RUN-don't walk-to the nearest exit!...There does not even have to be a reason for it or it may just be that someone does not like your favorite shade of lipstick. It is not worth jeopardizing your license-these people will stop at nothing to get rid of staff members they have singled out including false accusations of unsafe nursing care.(I have seen it happen more then once) You are better off giving notice and leaving before they ruin your reputation and take away your lively hood....I love LTC but in my experience it can be rife with this kind of behavior. You've got to cover your butt.I currently float full time in a large facility and belive me-there are a few units that I float too and know I must tread very very carefully....We can't all be best friends but we have to work together to deliver the care the residents deserve. It's sad when you come across people with personality disorders, people that like to create chaos everywhere they go so they can "step in and save the day" by running off someone they don't like ( who they are usually threatened by) Anyhoo-you KNOW what you need to do....PS-if a foley catheter "falls out" after your co-worker has inserted it I would do an incident report. If the balloon is still inflated most likely she inflated before she got it in the baldder...OUCH! A nurse can do alot of damage doing that....Good Luck

I don't know why it seems most of the serious nut cases find their way into LTC, but its true. Think it has something to do with it being easier to find positions of power there, where they can then proceed to make life a hell for whatever staff member they choose at the moment.

Yes, indeedy, if I were you I'd be running out of there. Its pretty plain to see they are trying to get you to quit - I'd do it before the accusations and lack of professionalism (on their part) make you sick and ruin your reputation.

    Good luck!

It sounds like you've hooked into another dysfunctional institution. If you are being treated this way at the start it seems to me that they do not manage in a professional manner. The fact that they 'heard' that you were looking for another job and therefore overlooked you basically says it all, unhealthy management. Is your mental health worth more? You could be the sacraficial lamb and keep beating your head against the wall or you can move on. In all likely hood you are complaining to your family and friends, what do they tell you? MOVE ON, help yourself, find a good fit.
