Generation Gap??

Published

Funny story: the other day one of the littles in my (K-8 ) building asked me "What video games did YOU play when you were a kid??"

Video games?? HaHaHa! I could've told him: Honey, when I was your age, the US Flag only had 48 stars.....and computers weren't invented yet, let alone games to be played on them!

What other differences do you see between students today, and of YOUR student days??

I find it disturbing they can't be still. Quiet is torture to young people today.

well i work in a school and 80% are hispanic with a few African- American staff members Anyway last year this class (2nd graders) were learning about slavery so a student who is from Iraq was in my office not feeling well and i could tell there was something on his mind. He said he wanted to ask me something about my past and that he just has to know. He asked me when i was younger was i a slave :nono: i laughed so loud because he was serious ....i just imagine him finally getting the chance to spend time with a black person (he was in my office at least 40 minutes) and finally ask the question that has been on his mind the entire month. i said "NOOOOOOO IM like 38 years old and slavery ended over 100 years ago" He looked at me like okay........................ so is that a yes or no (CHILDREN HAVE NO CONCEPT OF TIME)

Corporal and other real/effective forms of punishment. Many teachers, coaches, and the principal, had their personal paddles on display for all to see and they didn't hesitate to use them.

I am 36 (for reference)

I know I have told my students how I didn't even touch a computer until I was in 6th grade. There is no way to show younger generations what it was like to not have the technology we do. Just as it is impossible for me to imagine life without a telephone or television.

The best I've come to explaining it to my student is discussing it in terms of time travel. Take a person out of the year 1600 and put them in 1700, life is pretty much the same. Take someone from the year 1350 and put them in the year 1450, not much different. If you transplant someone from 1916 and plop them into today, the world is a completely different place. Travel wise, tech wise, social issue wise.

I don't think that this generation is any less respectful than any other group of children to pass through our world. Every generation has the exact same complaints about the following generations. The argument is as old as recorded history.

Oh ToniH, Out of the mouths of babes!! I adore how the kids will have no concept of how old the adults are - one guess is 15 the next is 72 when the actual age is more like 33. I tried to explain to my daughter the concept of going to get film developed and having to wait a week or more and having no clue what the pictures you took looked like. I blew her mind with that one.

I am 36 also and I've been asked what games I liked to play on my mom's cell phone during long car trips. I laughed and said we didn't have cell phones when I was a kid so I read a book on long car trips or played the license plate game with my sisters. Blank stare.

@kidzcare So true i never though about it like that are 100 years of advancement vs. past histories 100 years of advancement. MP3 player, caller ID, even the FIT BIT stock has went down they are losing millions because everything that they offer you can also get on your phone.

@Flare me and my mother solved a heated debate over pictures because she was claiming that a set of pics were hers and my argument was that these were my pics because i got them developed at one hour photo. All this is foreign to my daughter because the pics they take just stay in the cell phone. AND my sister made a huge mistake of asking a 19 year old why he didnt card for cigarettes this was years ago she then said "how old do i look" BIG MISTAKE he said 45ish she was like 27 at this time ( she been smoking since 12 though) lol KIDS THESE DAYS i will never ask anyone to guess my age
