I know I"m not the only one.

I have one son, who will be two in June, I start in August. I can't believe he'll be almost four when I'm done!

Just started my LPN training and I have 2 daughters (a high school freshman and a kindergartener).

Specializes in NP / USAFR Flight Nurse.

You mean "Who isnt?!?!"

Most of my class has children and some even have grandchildren.

Specializes in Urgent Care.

2 boys here- 7 and 9.

I'd say that over half of my class has small children & all but one are single parents. We have 2, maybe 3 that are pregnant.

I have 2 girls that I also homeschool. A lot of my classmates have children, we have a couple pregnant ones. It's certainly do-able!

Specializes in Med/Surg/Tele.

I'm in my first semester of NS-I'm pregnant, I'm due over the summer break.

So I will have a 7 wk old when I start back at my 2nd semester.

I know I can do it! It's been done before!

Specializes in Critical Care: Cardiac, VAD, Transplant.

I have 5. I started my prereq's when my youngest was 3 and my oldest two were 11. I am in my first semester of 'non-clinicals' and will be starting the clinical portion in the fall when my youngest is in first grade. My oldest son is recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and my youngest son has SS. They keep me real busy, but they also help drive my motivation! Oh yeah, and I have a very supportive husband to help whenever needed:) .We have never used daycare or sitters and have managed it fairly well.

I will be starting nursing school in August and my daughter will be ll months. When I graduate in Dec 2009 she will be 3 years old. My daughter is also my great motivator to start and complete nursing school. My husband is an OTR Truck driver usually only home on weekends. I have a great support system in my parents they watch my daughter while I'm at work, and will also take care of her while I am in school. The BSN program is part-time evening and weekends so I know it will be doable, failure is not an option for me.:nono:

Specializes in Geriatrics, Cardiac, ICU.
I'm not in nursing school yet. I am still taking my prereqs. It helps to have a support group/family. My school offers night time and weekend clinicals in the spring and daytime weekday clinicals in the fall. So I am going to wait another semester so I can do the night time clinicals. The grandparents will be able to watch my dd. She will be 2 in December, 5 when I graduate. After I graduate I don't think I will go to work full time. I think I will do the online RN to BSN and maybe work per diem or something. The online only takes a year if you do it full time. This way I can go to school at nights/weekends/online and I don't have to commute 1 hour to the full time day only BSN programs.

Good Luck

Per diem positions are not usually open to new grads. You need some kind of orientation at first and per diem nurses are expected to already be able to take a full load of patients because they are filling in for someone else.

I don't think I've ever seen a part time new grad position.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Cardiac, ICU.

I have two kids, 4 and 6. I graduate in December and they will be 5 and 7.

Like another poster said, failure is not an option.

I have a 4 year old and a 3 year old. A lot of my classmates have children, also.

I also have to agree with the above poster who said you are going to be hard pressed to find a part time job as a brand new grad. They want you there full time so they can make sure you know or learn the things you need in order to be a successful nurse. But, the full-time nurse I am working with for clinicals only works 3 12-hour days per week.

Specializes in Pediatrics, High-Risk L&D, Antepartum, L.

I have 4 kids.

My oldest, 10 year old, recently moved to live with her dad...the whole grass is greener thing. She's still here on the weekends I don't have clinicals and I do all the transportation (1 hour each way without traffic). So my weekends without clinicals are pretty tied up.

I then have a 7 year old who is my least involved child. He's gifted and comes with a unique personality and really needs extra attention because of it. He's my little violinist.

I have a 6 year old diagnosed with a speech disorder, PDD (probably going to get an Aspergers diagnosis in a couple of years) and ADHD.

I have a 3 year old with CP. She may also have a myopathy. She had a myopathy diagnosis but it was recently put back on hold. She's in speech therapy and PT. She also has a feeding tube with a pump that LOVES to alarm at night. It's also not common for her to puke a feed at 3 or 4 am or for the tubing to unhook and feed the bed. So sleeping through the night doesn't always happen. She also still nurses through the night.

So I'm doing it with 4 kids a few with special needs/disabilities and very few nights sleeping through the night. I'm also the only one who does anything in the house as my husband really stinks when it comes to supporting me by picking up the slack.

So school with kids is doable. It gets busy but it can be done.
