What type of nursing do new graduates go into??

I know that we all have our areas that we hope to be working in someday, but realistically where do new graduates usually start their nursing careers? Do most begin in med-surg gain experience and then move into other areas?

Some choose to start in medsurg. Other decide to go ahead and work ER, Trauma, ICU, Cath Lab, Cardiac, Pulmonary, Step-down, etc. Good luck!

The smartest move to make (in my opinion) is to start with a med-surg. unit. I started at a hospital with 4 med/surg. units. I worked on the abd/vasc/ent unit. Loved it. Got great experience. Now I work in an inpatient AODA/Mental Health unit. Sky is the limit after a solid foundation.

I think that students are ending up in all different places, probably depending on their interests, the hiring that is occurring in their areas, and each facility's philosophy on new grads.

I know when we had orientation for my class, a set of RNs came in to speak to us. Two were fairly new grads. One went directly in to telemetry and another directly to the ER.

I am personally thinking that for now I also want to work ER. I have spent some time on the ER thread here at allnurses.com (under Nursing Specialties) and see where others have posted the question of going directly to the ER. The answers have varied from very positive to starting out via the med/surg route.
