What is MRSA?

  1. This phrase seems to come up allot. What is it and can it be prevented? They say no question is a stupid question unless it isn't asked (especially as a student)! Thanks!

Thanks everyone!! I figured it was a nosocomial infection, just didn't know what caused it. Hand washing is a big thing for me, even in my own home!!! No one comes to the table or touches any dishes without washing their hands first. The boys aren't too thrilled with it, but I really don't care! Good habit to get into!!!

It's a strain of staph aureus that is resistant to the antibiotic Methicillin. Normally S. aureus is susceptible to this drug but this variant strain is not. Hope that helps!

we just recently had a lecture on drug resistant bacteria. There are some factors that help cause this. Funding for drugs, micro, ect has been cut. Aids(I can't remember what the deal is but it has something to do with the weakened immune system. Get this one cattle farmers inject their cattle with ATB, and growth hormones, which we in the end are eating the hamburgers and steaks and therefor the ATB and growth hormones which we don't need. Doctors are guilty of prescribing ATB without a Culture and sensitivity test. So many times the wrong ATB is prescribed ect. And how many times have you gotten a prescription and don't finish the whole 10 regime because by the 4-5 day you feel better. Another one is IV drug users, has been written that when they purchase drugs that for an extra 10 dollars they get ATB to ward off infections. All this gives bacteria time and means to mutate and the ATB don't work. It takes about 10 yrs to dev ATB that work, so whithout the funding it is hard to stay in front of the game.
