What happens if you drink a beer?

I am in nursing school. I am 39 yrs old and every once in a while I would like to drink a beer or mixed drink while I am out with my husband. If they give me a drug test the next day, or a few days later, would I fail and be thrown out of the program? I am NOT an person who drinks regularly. I have had 2 beers this year...but...this last few weeks have really been rough and I would like to drink one every once in a while to relax...what do yall think? :)

Unless they're testing specifically for alcohol metabolites, I don't think that it will show up in a routine 5 panel drug screen. I believe that most current 5 panel screens test for methamphetamine, opiates, THC, cocaine, & amphetamine. (I asked the MD the last time I was tested by my employer)

I don't see why any program would test for a legal substance as long as you are not showing signs of recent use or intoxication while on duty.

Just to let ya all know.....if any of you eat poppy seed rolls, or potica (a slovak type of nut roll), you can turn up positive. I love the stuff, but really watch it.

Read your school student handbook. I don't think alcohol is a problem unless you drink or are intoxicated at clinicals or at school. And drug addiction or alcohol addiction isn't an automatic boot in many schools. My school has a program where you can go to rehab and work a plan and remain in the program.

As for the poppy seeds, I just recently heard (as I had to test for Volunteering at the hospital) that you would have to ingest quite a large amount of poppy seeds for it to affect the test. More than someone would care to ingest. But, I'm only saying it through "the grapevine".

also, a blood test can reveal the amount of alcohol STILL in your system, which will determine how long ago you MIGHT have finished that last drink. I don't think I could make it through NS without crying in a few beers.

I forgot to mention that the lady taking my urine 2 weeks ago said that taking sudafed will show up as amphetamines. Thank God I was out and had to resort to benedryl, because we had just had late season rains and everybody had allergy problems. Our whole clinical group did fine on the random screen, though.

Hello, Pmdc,

I totally agree with you.

Thanks Guys!! I passed my first 2 tests today!!!! I think I will "Pop a Top" now!!!! Cheers!!!!!

We'd see a nursing shortage like we've NEVER seen before if we get in trouble for ingesting alcohol on our off time.
