hanging down (not propped up) such as a leg dangling

Any position that is going downward as in being pulled toward gravity. You can be standing in the anatomical position and your hand while positioned normally at your side will be dependent. You can be sitting in a chair and your feet and legs will be in a dependent position. If you are lying down on a bed and your arm happens to hang over the side, it is in a dependent position. Another way to think of "dependent" is to imagine how the limb would be positioned if there were a magnet at it's distal end that pulled it toward the gravitational center of the earth.
