PlanB after getting kicked out of nursing program

  1. I was recently kicked out of my nursing program because i didnt meet the GPA requirements. I never failed any classes or nursing classes, didnt have to retake any as well. I was a first year college student and didnt know how to balance all these hard classes and needed to make sure i had a C+ or higher in all of my pre rec nursing courses. I obviously did meet those requirements, but because I got 2 C's and a C+ in non nursing courses my overall gpa was a 2.5 and my second semester gpa was a 3.1. I didnt meet the overall gpa requirement, I was .01 away. I wanted to know can i still become a nurse? Will it be harder to get into another program? I just dont know what i should do im very scared and need advice.

Can you retake any of your prerequisites and get a higher grade? I'd have a chat with the advising department at the school you want to attend and see what they have to say about it.

I did, i wrote an appeal explaining my circumstances and they didn't take in consideration that i have passed all my classes and was just .01 away from the requirements. Not sure yet though if I can retake any courses yet

Gah, I'm so sorry, I misread your original post.

Ignore what I said at first about retaking prerequisites, but I would definitely check in with advising to see if there are any possible next steps.

Your post doesn't specify what your grades in your nursing prerequisites were, but if you got the two C's in non-nursing courses, why don't you just take an additional elective course (or two) to boost your GPA?

Also, I'm a bit confused, are you saying you need a 3.11 or above to qualify for the program? I'm thinking you meant 0.1 - making it a 3.2 and above. Depending on how many credit hours (or units) you have, it shouldn't be terribly difficult to raise your GPA above that benchmark. Good luck!

Could you see if those classes will transfer to a different program?

So you weren't actually *in* a nursing program, you were just taking the pre-reqs & applying. Correct?

Some colleges have a pre-professional nurses track that guarantees a spot in the actual ADN/BSN program as long as certain conditions are met.
It would appear from the OP's post they were probably in a similar program and have since been removed.

So...let me see if I got this right:

    1. You're not in a nursing program...you're a pre-nursing student
    2. You're in your 1st year (i.e. Freshman)
    3. Your current OVERALL GPA is 2.5
    4. Your second semester GPA was 3.1

You don't say what your first semester GPA is but based on your provided information it was a 1.9. If that is the case I don't understand how you "did not have to retake" any courses....you most definitely need to repeat courses.

You should consider retaking some classes. Cs are not at all competitive. You're going to be in the running with people who have over a 3.5 GPA. Try retaking some classes that count toward your degree this summer.

The fact that you were able to pull your GPA significantly higher than it was in the first semester tells me you're a hardworking person so yes, you can still be a nurse.

It must be difficult and it's okay to be scared, brennareilly. If nursing is what you really want and it's in your heart, then what are you waiting for?? retake couple pre-req classes to make them a "B" or "A". You already know what it takes to get into the program. TRUST ME, it'll be embarrassing and maybe even humiliating but just get through it (remember your reason to succeed.) Talk to your advisor. I retook intro A&P, Microbiology, History, and even had to repeat a nursing program. Failed out of ADN program but didn't want to give up so I applied for an LVN program 6 months later. Started working in the emergency department as an LVN while working through the LVN-RN program. Now I'm what most of my patients consider a "motivated, passionate, and caring" nurse. Currently working in a neuro-unit as an RN, grinding my way through the RN-BSN program. I'm loving it but it's not easy. You have to leave your pittiness and pride behind, and start knowing what's more important to you. It's okay, brush it off and keep moving forward!

If the problem is that your GPA is too low, then they might let you apply to re-enter the nursing program once you get your GPA up.

What you wrote doesn't make sense to me. If I understood correctly, you were doing prerequisites for a nursing program, and didn't get accepted in because your GPA was too low. Nursing is VERY competitive. A friend of mine got one A- and was denied into the nursing program. If I were you, I would retake those classes and get the best score possible, then apply again. Maybe even apply to other schools as well. If nursing is your passion and you work hard to get in, I'm sure everything will work out for you in the end. I wish you the best
