Any of you doing any nurse externships or have done them in the past or are interested in doing them? If so, what is it like? do you like it? do you need a certain g.p.a? any info would be appreciated

I just started an externship at an outpatient Cancer Center this semester. I work 1-2 days a week and then I'll work full time all summer as an extern. After the summer and when school starts up again, I'll go back to 1-2 days per week.

So far, I love it. I just quit my job at a local hospital as a PCA to take this position.

No regrets so far.

Best,

I would make sure to mention something along the lines that the externship will better prepare you as a professional and competent nurse upon graduation.

Also, don't forget to mention that you want to work for the hospital you are interviewing with for the externship when you graduate.

Good Luck

I am actually attending orientation at a hospital in which I have been hired as a nurse extern on Monday. I am going to be about 60% of what my pay will be if I am hired on as a Graduate Nurse. I am required to work one 12 hour day every 6 weeks. You basically work in a CNA role with many learning oppurtunities. Being an extern not only gives you work experience, but it also allows you to decide if you like the hospital and can work there when you graduate.

Another good suggestion is you should also do your homework and interview the hospital. Not only do you want them to like you, but you need to like them. Ask them about their ratios, turnover rate, pay offered to GNs, tuition reimbursment, etc... These are really important for you when you finally are deciding which hospital to work for when you graduate.

Good luck!:twocents:

When I had the interview for my externship I had what I considered difficult questions. Like, tell me about a time when you had to prioritize patient care, how did you make your decisions? When was a time you provided excellent care to a patient?

It was all about patient care. I was lucky to have been working in a hosptial for about a year prior as a tech, I pulled from those experiences rather than school. If I had only done clinicals, I would have been hard pressed to have any good answers.

thx all the replys. refer to previous reply from shock-me-sane. im the type tht u just describe which only have school clinical experiences, if they are going to ask me this question, it is going to be hard. by the time in summer, i will just finish my second semister clinical rotation in NY.anyway, im working on the essay now. because i want to finish all application before school start from winter break. next semister gotta be hard, im worry i won't make it, anyway, im going study hard as much as i can.

thx for all supports!
