Hello everyone, this is my first time here, so first i would like to say hi, and hopefully i will be able to get through all classes with your help. I am 23 yrs old, and a single mother of 2 children...5 yrs, and 5 mo. I will be starting my pre-reqs in May, and im very excited. I will hopefully be accepted into the Nursing Program in 2005. Basically, i would just like any advice on getting through the nursing program. Any tips that you think will be helpful, and situations that you have been in that you were scared about, nervous...whatever...i would really like to hear about anything and everything...anything that will give me a heads up on what to expect...Thanks in advance to all replies!

Welcome!

My advice would be to plan, plan, plan... and organize before you start.

Then learn all you can about your own personal learning style... there are lots of websites about it. Knowing how best you can study will help you to focus your attention on what will work for you. I need to take notes and rewrite reading passages... this helps info to stick for me.

Don't be afraid to speak up in classes... let the instructors know if something is confusing you. Probably others are confused too, they just aren't brave enough to ask.

Do extra credit! I always do every bit of extra credit that I can that way I'm not so worried about my grades.

Sit near the front... if not the front row... of class. It's harder to get distracted that way.

I took lots of different classes each semester... not all sciences and math, until this semester. But then, that's all I have left.

Now about the fear... I was afraid of going back to school for 25 years. I felt too dumb. I finally realized that I wanted my BSN and decided to go for it. I was so nervous... thought I would never be able to keep up with those just out of school. But I have excelled... to my amazement! I have just one B on my official transcript and that is in Algebra. I'm not overly smart or nerdy, I am just mature enough to apply myself and the teachers really like that. It won't be easy for you, but let your instructors know when you need help. Don't be afraid to get help with tutors, study groups, etc. All of that has been my salvation!

Good luck! Glad to have you in the group!

My advise to anyone just starting down the road to nursing school would be to take all non science classes first, then take your biology, micro, chem, and Anatomy/Physiology so that when you get to nursing school its all fresh in your mind.......It will help!

Good Luck!!
