I Must Be Crazy...

Nursing Students General Students

I'm starting an ADN program on Sept 13th. I have a BS already but an ADN was the cheapest route for me to go.

My program we take Fundamentals and Dosage Calculation first semester. I'm taking dosage calculation online, as I think it's the best way for me to get through it. My professor for fundamentals is the one that teaches the online dosage calculation, and she seems really nice and helpful.

There are a bunch of nursing elective classes I want to take. Actually I want to take most of them that are offered. I was looking at the schedule of the classes and I found one that fits time wise. I'm considering taking alternative health care modalities. From the handbook: "An introduction to commonly used alternative health care modalities including: yoga, meditation, touch therapies; aromatherapy; herbs; naturopathic healing; humor; music; acupuncture; and biofeedback. Students will practice and experience these techniques in the classroom and discuss benefits, adverse effects and contraindications."

Am I crazy to want to take an elective my first semester? Am I better of waiting till the spring to start taking electives? Two of them, pharmacology & pathophysiology I will take for sure because I'll need them down the line for my BSN.

Any advice would be great. Thanks!

We talked about the alternative HCM during our Fundamentals course. As a matter a fact, they may have come up in semesters after that, I don't recall. I don't see the harm in taking it along with Fundamentals.

I have to take electives every semester in order to graduate on time.

A lot of the electives that they offer the topics are touched upon during fundamentals I know. There is another one (Diet in Health & Illness) that touches on that I'd love to take but when it's given I have clinical. It's partly online also, so that really stinks but nothing I can do.

I'm just afraid that it will be to much. I know I was told not to take microbio with them, so I'm waiting till the winter semester to take it.

That sounds like a fun class! I wish my campus offered it. My schedule is already pretty packed this semester, with Fundamentals, Med/Surg I and Pharmacology. I don't have time for any electives, but I'll probably start taking some classes towards my BSN at another University next summer, since my ASN program doesn't have summer sessions. I go to a local community college, and it has an articulation agreement with a 4-year school that allows you to take all of your gen ed requirements for your BSN online. There are so many interesting classes that I can't wait to take.

I have all my general eds for my BSN done because I have a BS. Pharmacology is considered an elective for us.

I would advise taking as many electives that you like as long as they leave enough time for core classes. As far a patho and pharm go I would not take any other electives that semester, pharm is not so bad but patho can be a full time job by itself let alone with other hard classes. Take it "easy" which ever semester you take patho.

Thanks for this advice!

I'm going to talk to someone in the nursing dept today and see what they say. With the amount of seats still opened for the one I'm looking at I have a bad feeling it's going to be canceled anyway. If not I think I'm going to take it!

I say go for it! I am doing the same next quarter, loading up on electives. I don't want to wait to the end because I want free time to study for NCLEX :)

You go girl!

Let us know how it works out for you!

Thanks everyone! After speaking to one of my friends, I'm leaning towards taking Perspectives On Death and Dying which will be more helpful (among other reasons). It will make my Monday's super long....but totally worth it.

Also FYI, you will probably need a Diet/nutrition class as well for your BSN. It won't be as hard as patho or pharm either.

I have it already, it was a pre-req to a few of the schools that I was looking at for an aBSN. With a B+ I don't see a need to repeat it. Having a BS already means I have a lot of the pre-reqs done, I'm going for the ADN instead because of price and I would have another semester before I could apply (my school doesn't let you take microbio until your done with both A&P 1 & 2) so the fact that I got in I'm staying.
