Hi everyone--

Is there a forum or section where I can get info on how learn about financial aid and grants options? If not, can anyone share their secrets? :chuckle

There is no specific forum for Financial Aid (although at times, one would be useful), so best suggestions is to scroll the recent pages of this forum (General Nursing Student Discussion) and the Pre-Nursing Students forum. There is at least one new financial aid discussion/question addressed per week and may of your questions may have already been covered.

Good luck! ;)

As a person in your shoes, all I can do is share my experience. I went back and forth about how in the world I was going to pay for nursing school and still live.... here's what I came up with, for all it's worth to ya...

Apply for financial aid even if you don't think you will get any. Ask your school if they have a WIA program which will fund tuition, books, etc. Apply for loans, it took me a while to come to terms with the fact that I was going to have to finance my future but I took a long hard look at things I have financed in the past and my education is way more important than any of that. Plus, with loans you can also use the money to help with rent, car pmts, whatever you may need. You also need to take in account that you may not be able to work or as much as you used to during school. Some people can, which I commend them for. But I am not one of those people. I had to take that in to consideration also.

The loans are going to work out for me the best, (and awaiting WIA approval). Don't be too proud to take out the loans, you will more than be able to pay them back once you are a PROUD NURSE, and you won't regret it a bit!

Good luck with everything.

Great post TFAM cant think of much else to add other than get your FAFSA done ASAP every year ( lots of people put that off because you cant do it til you file your taxes but it puts you at the front of the lines for all of those first come first served basis grants) that always makes things easier. And take advantage of your schools financial aid office , lots of people at my school seem intimadated to just go in and tell them Hey I have no idea what I am doing Help me please, but that is why they are there...ask them to help you find any money that you might possibly be eligble for and be willing to do STACKS upon STACKS of paperwork ...it is more than worth it !

Goood luck

You should really get your FAFSA done as close to Jan 1 as possible. Obiously you don't have your tax info yet, but you can estimate your income for your FAFSA just to get it filed and then submit a correction once your taxes are done. This is important because your financial aid office literally takes the applications in the order they arrive and when they run out of funds to give out....they run out.
