I am so hurt and angry right now that I didn't know who to talk to! Our final exam is the same week as graduation. I missed my grade by 1 point..ACTUALLY I'm being failed for a HALF a point. We need 75(74.5) and my average in this last class (med surg3) was 74. There is nothing they can do..nothing??? I have to repeat this class and it's not offered again until January! I have sacrificed so much, quit a 10 year job to finish school, trying to take care of 4 kids and sustain a household. I feel like a failure, I am hurt, disappointed, and angry..at myself and everyone else..I have cried every tear I think I have, talked to to department chair and all..nothing..please someone, give me some advice and some encouragement!

It does sound like you have a lot going on, and I think a lot of people in your shoes wouldn't have even gotten the 74.5. Maybe there is someone you can talk to about it?

If not, January is only 5 months away...and I'm sure the 2nd time around, since you almost passed it the first time, you'll get an A or a B+.

never give up, always know you'll get there someday. Clear your mind, you gotta remember it'll be history someday.

I can only imagine how you must feel...I'm so sorry! As you know, the job market for new grads is horrible so my advice is this....take these next few months while you wait to retake the course and try to volunteer at hospital in your area, work on your resume/cover letter, etc.- This way, when you are finally done with school, you will be ready to go & get that job! Work on getting ready for your future and try to look at not passing this course as a bump in the road that will be a distant memory once you get that job!

A handful of people in my school failed a class during the last semester. They were given reentry for the next semester to retake the class, and they graduated. Although it's devastating to one's plans, there is recourse for many people in your situation, and you will finish.

Wow...that is really tough. Sympathies to you. *hug* I have friends who had to repeat courses over half a point as well, but their second time around in the course they did much better and understood the material even better. The grades really do matter - it is a reflection of what you understand. If I could do nursing school all over again (I work as an LPN, am an RN grad) I would have studied even harder and committed more to memory. That's my only regret.

I know this feels like the worst thing in the world right now, and you probably just want to give it up. But that's not an option - you worked too hard, for too long, at this. YOU WILL SUCCEED. Having the large family and all the craziness that goes along with that is not too conducive for doing your best at school. Take the time til January to enjoy your family and yourself, and start studying the material for that class here and there to prep some. Make a plan - how will you do your best come Jan and you start this class? What will the family do to help you so that you can achieve this? Have a family meeting and I'm sure they will all be happy to chip in wherever they can to make things easier for Mom.

Good luck, keep your chin up, and always have faith. Believe in yourself. :redpinkhe

Thanks guys..yes I talked to the teachers, there were no questions that they could "throw out" for extra points nor did the department head suggest and help..it's like a "there's nothing we can do" type thing..so I just have to suck it up and accept failure..I know I am not the only one who has dealt with this nor will be the last, but at this time and moment I feel so horrible. I have to find a job temporarily until (IF I go back) the next class..my family has sacrificed a lot and we struggled financially just for me to finish..but I keep praying God shows me that there is a reason this happened, I have not seen that yet. Yaug, yes I know soon it will not feel so bad when it's old news, but I can't imagine not still being so hurt by it..

Oh did I mention that I already have a job offer at the hospital? I have to call them now and let them know I have to decline bc I was not successful..But oh well *sigh*. You all have given me such good advice and encouragement..thanks for that..CHar.LPN those are some good tips thanks so much

You are gonna be one of those nurses with a story to tell!

You are going to be successful in nursing and you are going to remember those perils that brought you there. Remember, timing is everything. That 74.5 does not have anything to do with you. Of course you will finish and pass NCLEX, timing is just alittle off for you.

You journey is different from others in your class because of your uniquness!!

Right now though, you may feel very isolated from others though, I do not know.

I know this because I have had challenges and all those just added to my expirience and testimony. I have alot going for me now; I always did, but it was a matter of time before my eyes where open enough to see it!

I have to find a job temporarily until (IF I go back) the next class..my family has sacrificed a lot and we struggled financially just for me to finish..but I keep praying God shows me that there is a reason this happened, I have not seen that yet.

dang, i can imagine how frustrated you must be, esp being off by .5 point.

i too, would feel devastated...

but i do know i would go back.

it concerns me that you said IF i go back.

i certainly hope you do.

if you didn't, you'd be letting a whole lot of people down.

please tell me you'll go back.

There is nothing that anyone can say that is going to make you feel better at this time. You need time to grieve about your loss.

Most of the nursing schools that I know have strict grading process and will not round up. It's not just your school. The grade needed to pass is spelled out at the beginning of school. It somehow feels worse to fail by a half point than by several points. However, you have not failed out of school!!! Just this last class, which can be repeated. Yes, it sucks that you will not be graduating with the rest of your class, but you can graduate. Yes, it sucks that the class is only given in the spring semester, but you can do the class again and have a better understanding of what is needed to pass.

During this time break from school may I suggest getting a nursing tech job at a local hospital. Hospitals when looking to hire a new grad do not ask how long did you take to get through school, they just want to know that you graduated and passed the nclex. By having a tech job, you will hopefully have a head start in getting a nursing job when you do graduate next year.

Keep your head up! I know it seems like a long time, but you obviously got this far for a reason. Everything happens for a reason and that reason may be unclear at the moment, but I'm sure there is a reason. Good Luck! Keep pushing and don't give up!
