Dismissal from nursing school without failing any course

I am supposed to enter my senior year in a BSN program by August, i already completed 3 semesters in the program. I just found out my nursing program sent my a dismissal letter for what they tagged "unprofessional" behavior. These behavior includes calling my teacher less than one hour to a lab class to get permission to be absent due to sick health, waking up late due to a sickness and could not attend a 6:30am clinical which i already made up, not being able to review my nursing exam afterwards because i wad having serious anxiety attack, etc. The point is that look for every opportunity yo write me up because I'm one if their best and the only black.

They already told me at the last disciplinary meeting that i have one chance before being kicked out and i have not used that last chance and they sent me a letter of dismissal when I'm already away for break.

My questions:

1) Can i appeal this successfully?

2) Can another school accept me if i choose to transfer?

3) Is it advisable to make this a court case and will it have any effect on finding a job here afterwards?

Note: I am an international student on an F1 visa for now.

Please address the OP and their problem. Let's not allow the thread to devolve into a back and forth of personal attack between people who have responded to the thread.

That makes no sense. Usually if you were "one of their best," they would go out of their way to accommodate you.

I appreciate your opinion but it is not really what i meant. I have been marginalized in so many things. I was actually denied acceptance even when i submitted all requirements and was among the top 10 applicants.

How would you know this?

They claimed one of my transcripts was missing but when i reminded the teacher i gave it to that she was the one i gave it to and she asked me not to submit again in future, she bowed her head in shame, got up and went to grab my file that has always been with them in the office and the transcript was in there.

It sounds like you tend to exaggerate. She "bowed her head in shame"? Lol. Not something I have ever observed a nursing instructor do, even if they do have to admit to being wrong.

Every school has an appeals process. Find out what yours is and get started right away. Unless you have proof of racial discrimination, that's going to be an unwise tactic.

If you are smart you will learn from this experience , change your attitude , stop using the race card as an excuse , learn to follow the rules and not make excuses for not following them...Nursing is tough , these rules in school are in place to determine how you will perform in the workplace when you become a nurse and weed out the students who make all sorts of excuses for not showing up on time , or at all......So what if you are an excellent student , if you cannot follow the rules what are your instructors supposed to do ? If the other students can make it to clinicals on time why shouldn't you.....Good luck to you , I hope that you will take these suggestions in the manner that they were intended , ie, to help you to understand that you need to change yourself and not expect those around you to change the rules for you.....

Don't listen to the ones that say "don't play the race card." The fact that we have to try 230293942x harder than everyone else who isn't black says enough. I know the feeling, being the only black woman in my cohort and not having the support needed as well as dealing with the ignorant class who don't realize their comments come off as insensitive. You have every right to feel the way you do, I had a peds instructor who would not get off my case bc I was more casual with my patients than she would have liked/critisized my every movement even when the nurse I worked with told me I was doing a great job. I came late to a clinical once by 20 minutes but the main instructor didn't think too much of it, bc she knew I was not intentional.

Keep your head up, and good luck to you! We have to stay strong and sadly, prove our worth.

Yeah, racism still exists, people. The race card is still valid in modern-day America.

But, regardless of whether you were discriminated against based on your skin color, you still established a pattern of behavior that demonstrated an inability to show up on time (or call out within a reasonable time) and also that your anxiety may inhibit you from being a competent nurse.

Unless she can prove racism, that particular part of her appeal will likely be unsuccessful. As we all know, racism/sexism/sexual harassment is often very difficult to prove, even when it is actually happening.

I see a point being missed. Employers want you at work.Sick or not. At least mine does. They don't care what color you are.

Maybe the school considers all abscences not excusable. Pretty sure you had to be dead at my school to not be there.

If op feels this was a race thing, then I guess you got to do what you got to do.lately my employer has been letting go of(what happens to be) a lot of non black people for "abscence issues".

OP if nursing is your dream please don't let this stop you. With your level, you can still doing LPN and bridge to RN or apply to an ADN program and see where you will be placed.

I think the term "race card" in of itself is wrong to say to anyone regardless of the person's color and how they feel that they were treated. It's not as light as a soccer game where a card is simply raised. When you are wronged, it sucks and hurts.

OP, just like you, I am black, identify with my culture and have an accent. No excuse given ever for it. Many professors and clinical instructors have said things to me and treated me in bad ways but I don't give it a single though and keep working toward my goal every day. As long as I show respect toward my patients and classmates, I let God do the rest. Patients come from all ages, race, culture, and conditions. So we need diversity in nursing. Schools need to stop this silliness toward students and focus on teaching.

OP please PM me.

It sounds like you have been struggling with the schedule, but the fact of the matter is you had another chance and they dismissed you anyway. Is it documented what the outcome was in the last meeting when they gave you that warning? I hope so, and I would use that when contesting the decision. I would be wary of using the race card when contesting it, I would question if there was some kind of misunderstanding, and "in the letter after our meeting on __/___/_____ I was given the following terms, 'quoted text'".

Also with this summer break, I would start contacting other schools and asking their recruiter/advisor about transferring. It's going to really vary by state and school systems. IE was it a private college versus a state, if state is it the same state, etc.

Good luck.

And you made it very, very easy for them to find the opportunities...

because I'm one if their best and the only black.
Oh, yes... you're a victim... Are you sure it's not also because you're beautiful? That's often the reason, you know...

They already told me at the last disciplinary meeting that i have one chance before being kicked out and i have not used that last chance
Evidently, you have...

1) Can i appeal this successfully?
Not likely...

2) Can another school accept me if i choose to transfer?
Maybe... probably not a public school, though. Check out the high-priced private schools... but you're likely to have to repeat a ton of classes... It's all business, you know?

3) Is it advisable to make this a court case and will it have any effect on finding a job here afterwards?
No, it's not advisable... and on what grounds? And with what evidence? And yes, it most certainly could have an effect on finding a job... Most employers are loathe to hire litigious people.
