Hello all I am doing my care plan and I have to give a definition of my patient's medical diagnosis'. Is Organic Effective/Affective Disorder the same as bipolar? Effect was what was on the charts, and when I did a search did you mean Organic Affect Disorder, so I am a little confused. Thnaks!

Specializes in med/surg, telemetry, IV therapy, mgmt.

The bipolar disorders and what is often called manic-depressive reaction are forms of affective disorders and are generally episodic in occurrence. There may or may not be psychosis with them. I'm not sure about effective disorders. There is a specific manual the doctors follow in diagnosing psych conditions that gives complete definitions of all the various psych disorders. Can't think of the name of it at the moment. Some of the nurses on the Psych Nursing forum might be of more help.
