    Hi there,

I found the study guide that went to my Med/Surg text to be extremely helpful. My text is sixth edition Medical~Surgical Nursing byLewis Heitkemper and Dirksen. The study guide ISBN # is 0-323-01855-6. Also someone here posted a pretty good website for helping with med/surg:

Good luck to you! Just take one day at a time!

    Lipincott's Review Series for Medical Surgical Nursing, 4th edition;
Prentice-Hall Review and Rationales for Medical Surgical Nursing

Between these two books, I have rarely had to revert to the laboriously long-winded textbook.

Maybe you need a good weekend off and away from the books? I'm in burnout now (just like every semester). Sometimes its healthy to get away from the books and come back to it later.

As far as the path of blood through the heart...I am a very visual person, and I LOVE cardio....I draw a picture of the heart Also a good way to remember where the tricuspid is (Tri to be Right) Once you can draw that heart from memory you will have no problem with the path the blood takes. This will also help you later when you work on critical care issues ie. learn Preload is filling pressures ie CVP and PAWP, Afterload is resistance ie SVR and PVR.
    You will get it....
    Hope this helps

Try to read the chapter and then go back and type or write out a chapter outline........get review and rationales for med surg, that should help! Med surg is a tough course but i think that reading and making your own notes will help you out!

I use Saunders and there's a Med-surg book by Huttel Ray, that is very concise on all the info that you are looking for. Have taken any Hesi test or similar? Sometimes you can access their website for additional questions. These have been the three things that have helped me the most through school.

    Good Luck

As far as something to remember the path of blood though the heart, I use the St. Joseph's aspirin commercial to help me remember.... A few months ago we had our cardiac exam and I still have it running through my head.... Here are they lyrics....

    Pump, pump, pumps your blood
The right atrium's where the process begins,
Where the CO2 blood enters the heart.
Through the tricuspid valve to the right ventricle
    The pulmonary artery and lungs.
Once inside the lungs it dumps it carbon dioxide
And picks up its oxygen supply
The it's back to the heart through the pulmonary vein
Through the atrium and left ventricle.
    Pump, pump, pumps your blood.
The aortic vavles where the blood leaves the heart
Then it's channeled to the rest of the bod
The arteries, arterioles, and capillaries too
Bring the oxygenated blood to the cells
the tissues and the cells trade of waste and CO2
Which is carried through the venules and the veins
Through the larger vena cava to the atrium and lungs
And we're back to where we started in the heart."

I found these lyrics on a webpage about Happy Days.... apparently a long time ago on Happy Days one of the characters sang this song to remember the blood flow in the heart for a test, or something like that.... The website it's off is this.... http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servle...threadid-67613/

    Hope this helps you out!
