Bullying in nursing school

yes, and if you a minority, they will poo poo you and ask if you are too 'sensitive'. The dean of the allied health program where i went to get my RN and was top of the class resigned te year after i was harassed and discriminated against. I knew what was going on, so I taped the instructors. If only you could have seen her eyes when i played the audio recordings....

No it was not your imagination. I have a BS in secondary education, and i know about the ethics and morality educators are supposed to follow. Most nursing instructors are frustrated older women either full of anger, fear, or are on some self righteous power trip. They will judge you in clinical settings, where they have a free license to judge, pass, or fail you based on the clothes you wear, your skin pigment, or if they bore you to sleep teaching their classes from reading from the book and basing half your grade on attendance. So if you draw the attention of these washed up, burned out, mostly boring gate keepers, they use the highly subjective clinical setting to harass you if they decide they don't like you for whatever reason, even if it has no basis in reality. So if you think your clinical check off instructor is being hard on you, chances are, she is. They have this quota mentality whereby they think if too many people graduate from their programs, they are too easy. Give them any excuse to come after you and issue that ticket, meaning you fail and wasted untold thousands of dollars and could have run circles around their so called top graduates, it doesn't matter. They will. They are very unprofessional and unethical and will destroy your dreams and rape your Constitutional rights because they don't like your gender, your race, the way you dress, etc etc and they know that this is hard to prove so it is routinely abused and so they do with impunity. Been there and experienced it. There are no protections for male nurses trying to get into this field

I too was a older student and I have just graduated. Although I never really experienced this like you have, I felt the same way, mostly by my peers. Although it is not right and you may feel very hurt, keep focused on what is important and that is graduating! I am now very good at ignoring comments. Hopefully we will be able to make more of a change when we are RN's. I actually think that it is has more to do with "ageism".

I will get my RN and I will be a different nurse from these examples. BTW I have seen examples of truly caring nurses and those who enjoy teaching. They are outnumbered by the poor examples.

I am an older nursing student working to achieve a lifetime goal of getting my RN. I have experienced "Nurses Eat Their Young" from two teachers in the form of remarks like you strntvtsking this seriously, you're the only student struggling with this. When loading a syringe the teacher kept firing questions at me. I finally said to her st one point, "I must not have done this correctly because you keep asking me questions." She said, "Not necessarily." She went on to accuse me of padding my patient assessment. It goes on. Yet I got a final grade of 84.5 in Nursing Theory. I wonder if anyone else has experienced bullying while in nursing school.

Sorry, I don't see anything in this post that rises to the level of bullying.

Older student here as well.

Youre not being bullied. You are being challenged and pushed.

Harder than the other students? Very likely.

Why? Because you ARE older and therefore your instructors expect you to know more, take this more seriously, and be a leader in your class. They are expecting you to set the example.

Had the same thing happen to me. I spoke with the instructor after class about it. She wanted to call on me 100% of the time as she knew I would always know the answer, she saw it as me setting the example for the other far younger students.

But as I explained to her, if she only ever called on me then the other students werent being challenged, they could cake walk through the class. It needed to be a balance. I understand she didnt want to wait for Joe/Susie to spend 20 mins to come up with the wrong answer to her question and waste valuable class time, but the other students needed to learn they needed to be prepared every day for class and to study the material, not just cram the night before the test.

I'd suggest you rise to the challenge, you will come out a better nurse for it. If its to much alternatively sit down one on one and talk to your instructor about it.

I am really sorry to hear of your bullying. Despite what some have said, bullying is real and happens in schools all the time. I think it is a trickle down effect. They were bullied so they bully. It is not just nursing, it is all professions, it just appears to be more prevalent or noticed in nursing as the profession is about caring, and it does not seem to feel like caring when you feel they are being mean. In all fairness to teachers they are not all bullies, and many are teaching you to have a tough skin and be able to multitask in the face of continued stress. This feels so wrong, and against all we have ever known; however, it can and does prepare us for the real world when other team members are doing exactly the same things while we are trying to get our work done. Please know that I do not feel there is any excuse for bullying, and I have been victim of it in nursing school myself. I am saddened that many on this site feel it is okay to perpetuate bullying, by bullying any poster. Stay strong, you will overcome and move on to be a nurse that does not bully others. The more nurses that break the cycle of bullying the better the profession.
