Best part-time job during school?

Nursing Students General Students

Published

Hi everyone,

I would like to work during school so I would not have to take out additional student loans. Since I would be a part-time, my tuition would be less than $3,000 a semester...so I was wondering if anyone could please suggest a part-time job I could seek during school to make the tuition (and that is flexible)? My classes would most likely be during the day. It would be a couple of years until I hit clinicals.

By the way - I am not a licensed nurses aide...so that is out right now.

Thanks!

I would suggest working at a hospital, as they will be more than understanding of your school schedule. I have a part-time job at a local hospital as a Health Unit Coordinator. It has already given me a lot of experience working in a hospital setting, and lots of exposure to nurses and nursing supervisors. When a doc writes an order, I input it into the computer. I also monitor the patients who are on telemetry, answer the patient call lights, keep the charts in order, and answer phones (usually from the pharmacy or a doc wanting to talk to a patient's nurse). I work on evenings, so it won't interfere with my classes during the day. By working second shift, I get a shift differential (which is nice!). I really like the job. I'm pretty much communication central on my floor, and I get the chance to meet everyone. Well that's just my :twocents: .

Good luck!

Amanda

You could be a unit secretary at a hospital...that's what I'm doing now while I'm in school(on the weekends). It offers a flexilbe schedule and money at the same time so it works out well.

i am currently working as a pns at a local hospital. pns stands for professional nursing student. i do the same duties as a pca/cna with a few extra things like assisting with some wound care and learning procedures from the nurses. i enjoy what i am doing and feel like it is giving practical experince while i am going to school. the hospital is also willing to work with my school schedule.

Hi. I am also in a similar position, not having taken the CNA classes yet. Do you need to have prior experience to get some of these positions in a hospital?

Like Unit secretary, coordinator, or PNS/A?

Thanks,

Kate

I think anywhere where you can have flexible hours.I myself work in the general store and I'm planning to work 2 days a week during my third semester out of four .I'm also planning to apply for a school loan in addition to working. The reason I'm planning to work is because I want to keep my health insurance, plus extra bucks wont hurt but I wont hesitate to quit if I will feel that it interfere with my school performance.

I always try to get a job on campus. The pay isn't spectacular, but I generally get tuition reimbursement for one class on top of my hourly pay. I can often study during work as well.

If you land in the right restaurant on the right shifts you can make a very good amount as a waitress. Although I've worked bad shifts at some not so great restaurants and made very little....

Right now I work as a part time manager at a retail store (20 hrs a week) and that would easily cover your tuition. Plus it's pretty flexible and I just schedule myself in on nights and weekends. Pretty much any place if they like you and you're a good employee will be happy to schedule you whenever you are able to work.

My friend who works 3 meals at the upscale pancake restaurant in the rich city makes more than I do though...... Although I appreciate the more relaxed setting of retail during school. I hate to be super stressed and busy constantly at my job when I'm super stressed and busy at school! Work is almost like a nice little getaway for me...

Waitress and retail jobs are pretty easy to come by and should do the trick until you get into the nursing program. I'm planning on working as a nurse tech after first semester, but I won't have previous hospital experience before then. It's almost impossible to get a job in the hospitals here with no experience unless you know someone. Maybe it's different where you live though.

Good luck in the job hunt-- I know things are tough right now.

Have you tried UPS? I worked there for 5 years as a second job, it's a nice gig. Keeps you in shape & you can basically shut off your brain (well not totally). If I wasn't already a PCT, I'd go back there. Plus they offer tuition assistance, but I am not sure how long you have to work there first.

If you can work at a hospital, it would be great exposure to the future. I am a tutor at school, so I get paid to study when there is down time. I don't know of any other job that will let me do this and it works out great.
