Lizz.....this is one of the times when I greatly agree with you. I have never understood how Atkins can be safe.

Kim, You and everyone else needs to actually read the book, then come back and discuss it. There is so much wrong information that is floating around. I guarantee that if you try it, even a modifed version you will feel much better.

Basically cut out sugar, whilte bread, white rice, and white pasta. You can eat vegetables, fruits, whole grain bread, etc.

We eat brown rice at my school every day, and my waist is smaller than I ever remember.

Read the book, as well as South Beach. Just pick what works for you. :balloons:

Suzanne...could you head over to the thread I started about what Bry is going to try to eat...I think I titled it something with Healthy substitutes....

I just can't see eating a ton of protein. It's not me...that's all.

Oh and I was going to tell you too, that I am taking Nutrition this summer and I really am anxious to see how much that course enlightens me!

That is where you are wrong. It is not a ton of meat.....

I don't eat that much meat..............just leave out what I wrote above and you will lose pounds without even trying.

Saw an old friend today, before I started my new way of eating, and his mouth was dropping..................and I am definitely not starving...feel better than I have in a very long time, and a lot more energy.....that is how I can stay up on the computer so late..... :)

It is actually one of the healthier diets as it does not leave out any food group.

I must add I drink my 64oz of water and no pop at all. But I have not quit drinking my morning coffee with caf in it or I would have a headache from H*** I am still loosing weight that is all that matters to me. That is the goal right?:)

The headaches are from caffeine withdrawl. I had them too. Have you some Advil handy. From my experience, I had the headaches for 2-3 days and then I was okay.

Yuo can actually make several flourless quiches at once and store in the firg and just nuke in the micorwave. Almost anything will work for the insides.

Examples:

1. grilled onions, several types of mushrooms, spinach, swiss chees

2. shredded chicken, mushrooms, baby corn, swiss cheese

3. zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach

4. chicken or turkey sausage, onions, mushrooms, cheese

5. loose hamburger, some type of sausage, pepperoni, and ?

Cook or brown all of the ingredients first. Put in a non-stock pan, I like frying pan size. Depending on how many that you are making, mix eggs with either sour cream or whipping cream and pour over the top. They will require baking for about 30 minutes (depends on pan size).

I always used real Swiss cheese over here, actually from Switzerland, and we do not have much of a choice of dairy products. With the cream, it tastes like a custard.

How much whipping cream do you use for 1 quiche? I tried to make with evaporated milk and didn't like at all. Also, chicken, brocolli, and cheese quiche is OUT OF THIS WORLD and I HATE brocolli.

I went on Atkins a couple of years ago, was on it for 6 months and my cholesterol shot up to almost 300, I lost 30lbs though. When my Dr. told me to stop Atkins, I tried the slimfast plan. I couldn't believe how quickly I lost 60 lbs, I got cysts & kidney stones & had to stop that too. Then the weight quickly found its way back. Now I am going to try the American Diabetes Association's diet- it seems the most practical & I hope this one works for me. Luckily, I only have 40 more to lose.

Everyone's body is different, so every diet won't work for everybody.

I have been on low carb for about 2 years. I eat more vegetables than I ever have in my life. Atkins is not about eatting all protein and fats!

Can anyone say that cutting out sugar, cakes, cookies, french fries, white flour, etc is a bad thing to do? I don't think so. I eat fresh vegetables, good fats, fresh meat and drink plenty of water.

I have never been so healthy as I am now. I have more energy than when I was younger.

Be careful of all the new low carb products that are out there now. They cause many people to stall in their weight loss. Just eat 'clean'.

A very good support site is: lowcarbfriends.com

Also the atkins.com site is very good.

Good luck to all you low carber! And by the way, READ the book. Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution is the book you should buy. The Atkins for Life is more for maintanence after you have lost your weight.

I went back on Induction a week ago, just to get the scale moving again after a stall-out that's lasted for a couple of months. Not only have I lost 4 1/2 pounds, I feel better than I have for several weeks. Why? I never did go back to eating sugar, but I'd started eating bread and foods made with white flour again, thinking I could get away with it because it wasn't cookies and donuts. WRONG!! I'm probably just as sensitive to these products as I am to sugar, because a) I started feeling depressed and achy again, b) once I let myself have some, I started craving it incessantly, and c) I couldn't stop with one roll or one package of crackers---I'd eat three or four before I was satisfied.

Now, this does NOT mean that I'll stay on the super-low-carb diet forever, in another week I'll be adding back fruits as well as increasing my veggie intake, but I now know I can't ever go back to eating regular breads, rice etc. As for this program not being healthy: I don't know about anyone else, I just know that for ME, eating lots of lean protein, veggies, and some fruit makes me feel better and keeps me more satisfied than any other kind of diet. I don't get hungry as often, as these foods "stick to the ribs" longer, thus I'm not as apt to snack and drive up my overall caloric intake over the course of the day (Yes, I track that too, because regardless of what diet you eat, calories DO count.) My energy level and endurance are higher than they've been since my twenties, although regular exercise helps along that line too.

While I wouldn't go so far as to recommend this diet to everyone, I know it's the right one for me personally, and it's healthy for me. My cholesterol levels are perfect, my blood pressure is much better than it was (142/72 yesterday compared to 180/120 six months ago), and the difference is obvious in the pictures on my refrigerator: one taken at Christmas, when I'd just fallen on my butt in the snow and sat there looking like a fat polar bear in my men's 3XL sweatshirt and size 24 sweat pants, and one taken just last month with me wearing a men's XL tee shirt and size 18-20 yoga pants. Still have a looooooooong way to go, but it's only been six months.......who knows where I'll end up? All I know is, for me, it's Atkins.......for life! :)

Hey Marla.....can you help me out on the thread I started this morning about Bryan's eating? I can't remember what I titled the darn thing but it's in the Break Room!

[color=#282828]please don't take this the wrong way, but i really don't agree with the whole low carb fad. starchy foods hold onto water, so when you omit carbs from your diet during the first 2 weeks of the low carb diet, you're really just losing water weight. carbs are vital to the functioning of your body. they are broken down into glucose, which is the preferred source of energy for your body. when you have no carbohydrates available, your body turns to other energy sources. some fat yes, but also lean muscle tissue.

[color=#282828]without carbohydrates to break down fatty acid chains, ketone bodies are produced (very acidic). ketones in excess result in a condition called ketosis, which is basically an upset between the acid/base balance in your body. many of these ketones are excreted in your urine, but some are released through your lungs when you breath. the acidity of the ketone bodies damage your lungs.

please don't take offense at this. i just want to make sure you are informed about the dangers of a low carb lifestyle. the key to successful weight loss is not dieting, it's a lifestyle change. i wish you the best of luck with your weight loss.
