Anyone working and going to school?

Hey all,

I'm about to start school in August and during that time I will be working full time to support my family. This is a career switch for me so I need to continue bringing in income as I work my way through school. The first couple of years I will just be working on my nursing prereqs, but my concern is about once I start the nursing curriculum in particular clinicals. Has anyone out there juggled clinicals and also working part-time or full-time so support yourself/family. Also, how much time on average during the week are you at the clinical site? What hours during the day/week are you doing clinicals? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

At my school they have an evening/weekend nursing program for those of us who have to work and go to school. I worked full-time with my prereqs and will work full-time during the clinical portion. I have no choice, but I find that I work better when I know I have less time to slack off. It can be done I am confident of that.

Starting in Aug I will have my nursing theory class monday 5-9pm, lab tuesday 5-9pm and clinicals on saturday 7-3:30pm. I am not thrilled about giving up my saturday, but I gotta do what I gotta do.

Tonya,

Where do you go to school? That type of flexibility in a program is would be perfect for me because I must continue working 40 hours a week. Does anyone know of any programs in the metro Atlanta area that have an evening/weekend nursing program?

Hi Chris,

I go to school in Pittsburgh. I would check with some local schools in my area because these evening/weekend programs are cropping up left and right it seems. Without them a lot of people would not be able to become nurses. Good luck to you.

Tonya,

I checked some schools in the area and what I have found is that those that do offer the evening/weekend degrees offer them for the RN -> BSN programs, not for the "generic" track nursing programs for those without nursing experience. Is your program for experienced nurses as well?

Hi Chris,

My program is the generic program for those of us new to nursing. Are you able to find an evening job so that you can go to school in the day?

I could find an evening job but it wouldn't pay anywhere near what I'm making now and I still have to support a family, mortgage, car payments, etc. So, it would definitely be nice to be able to go to school in the evenings and weekends, it looks like I'm just going to have to juggle work and school as best as possible. Thanks for your input.
