Any tips for OB and Med/Surg clinicals?

  1. Hi there
I am a second semester freshman in an ASN program and I am going to start clinicals soon. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on how to get the most out of clinical experiences or how to make them go more smoothly. Up till now the only clinicals I had were in the nursing home. Any help is appreciated. Thank you very much.

Know the meds you have to pas inside and out. Side effects, how it works etc. Don't hide from instructors, seek them out, and if you break sterile technique or have a problem, start over and explain to the instructor why you felt you had too.

KR, I am in my second semester on a med/surg floor.Always be open to try procedures even if you're palms are sweating! Experience does pay off! Try to learn from the floor nurses you work under (good & bad). The floor nurse's will see the serious students and will help you out. Always have plenty of advil (you'll need it)!Always remember how many weeks are left in the semester, for encouragement. Smile, Smile even when you're ready to cry. Lean on other students when you're able to cry to each other.Yes even one day there will be no more assessments, NSG care plans, med sheets and NSG test. I to look forward to that day. Even after all this nursing is that kind & comforting word to a dying pt, the alzheimers pt, and stressed family members that need encouragement. Nursing pay maybe good but the caring for and loving that person who has a soul is what it is all about. Good Luck and Keep Smiling
