Wounds and Fainting?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey everybody! I'm currently a CNA waiting to start school this fall for my nursing degree. I just started working at a hospital and was orienting with wound management. I was super excited because I've always wanted to do this! I've never had a queezy stomach before and I never thought I would! So 40 minutes into a wound procedure, I got extremely hot and felt light headed. I repositioned myself and began to work again but I couldn't do it anymore. I had to excuse myself and leave. As I'm walking down the hall, my ears start ringing, everything was blurry, and I knew I was gonna faint! I didn't though because I sat down in time. I walked it off and even though I felt extremely queezy, I rejoined my nurse and continued the procedure. 15 minutes later and that same feeling took over again. I got something to drink and then finished the procedure. The rest of the day I was okay but still very nauseas. Is this normal for first time experiences? Do you think this will effect my career in wound care/surgical assisting? I was very fascinated in what was going on but even though I was enjoying myself, is my body just going to randomly pass out while doing this? Thanks for the input!!

PS. Sorry for the long post!

It doesn't necessarily mean anything. You may have been a little light-headed to start out with, but too busy to notice. It's also possible that something very specific affected you as opposed to the general experience. I can become very ill watching surgeries or other procedures if the patient is crying or distressed. If they're asleep or comfortable, the same procedures don't affect me at all. I'm also very sensitive to twisting motions when they're combined with surgery, and I'm much more likely to feel ill in the morning than I am at night (because I'm a night person).

Do take a time out when you need one. Trying to hold out will only make things more extreme.

Thank you! That makes me feel a bit better! I'm used to working nights as well and now that I'm thinking about it, there was a lot going on. Like I didn't eat breakfast, I was cramping, and so forth. Thank you for your input!
