Would you be insulted by this?

In the past, the hospital where I work would give all the nurses a gift for nurse's week. Usually the hospital would give things like pens, candy, notepads, etc. This year, however, they are offering a tee shirt with the hospital's logo but are charging $10 for any nurses who want the tee shirt and said they will allow nurses to wear the tee shirt in place of their scrub top. To me, it is the equivalent of having someone pay for their own birthday present. Would this insult anyone?

Insulted? No. They aren't obliged to give me anything beyond pay for the hours I work. I would not, however, be participating by purchasing one.

I wouldn't bother to be insulted ... but I wouldn't buy the t-shirt. Like a previous poster, I don't buy items with logos on them in general. If a company wants me to advertise their products, they should pay me -- not the other way around.

My hospital gives away "free" t-shirts when you make a donation. I like the fact that you can choose not to get a t-shirt. The choice not to get one saves the hospital the money of providing it. I'd rather my donation go to help the hospital, not on a poor-quality t-shirt.

And yes, I do donate to my hospital. We are a charity hospital and really need those donations to compensate for the charity care we provide. I have also been able to use donated money on special projects to support nursing. So yes, I donate -- but I call it a donation and take a tax deduction for it.

Yes it is insulting. It is also phenomenally ignorant to expect people to pay for the opportunity to be your billboard. All you can really do is politely decline to purchase the t-shirt.

No, I agree, I wouldn't be insulted, I would be delighted if my employer would mark nurses week or day though, its a nice thought - wouldn't buy the t short though, would rather wear scrubs

We got bracelets last year and this year year we are getting a donation to the hospital made in our names. Gee thanks.

Whatever we get is paid for out of our NM pocket. While in years past the hospital gave pretty cool little gifts, we've had nothing from them for at least 4-5 years. I appreciate the attempt by the NM to show appreciation. I just wish she wouldn't. We both work for asses, and pretending otherwise insults my intelligence.

That's what I find insulting.

I'm not particularly happy or proud of where I work right now. Only an idiot would want to celebrate that.

One place I worked gave a recognition dinner at a fancy-smancy place. Those being honored were expected to buy their own food, which was quite expensive. They had no input into where it would be or what the food would be. They were expected to show up and pay their bill. I found it insulting. No one RSVP'd and it was cancelled.

We have polo shirts available with the hospital logo and I did buy some. No one has to purchase a shirt if they don't want one.

For the most part, we are treated well. There are always places where things could work better.

There were too many separate "weeks" to celebrate so our hospital puts on a luncheon at work in the boardroom each month for a different department. I'm much rather have something like that than some silly trinket.

Not insulted nor shocked. I certainly would not buy one. They used to give us a little $5 gift card to a fast food place for our birthday and we got taxed on it! So they cut it out. I say keep your gifts and your nurse's week. I don't need anymore water bottles, hats or tote bags with the hospital logo on them.

I think the donation to the education fund is the best Nursing gift idea I have ever heard! That is a thoughtful, meaningful contribution to the enrichment of the Nursing staff. Much better than a trinket and more in keeping with the spirit of Nursing recognition than giving out individual gifts IMO.
