Working as a software consultant RN

Nurses General Nursing

I may have an opportunity to work as software consultant with a company that makes EMR software ... I'm just afraid that it wouldn't be a great investment in my nursing career, since it doesn't involve any direct patient care.

Has anyone here taken such a position, and/or does anyone have any words of advice on this? I have been unemployed for 7 months, and the job market is awful -- especially for a nurse with limited experience.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.

I say, take what you can get in this job market. Worry later about your versatility. Make a move later, if you can.

As a software consultant I can suggest you take the position. Helping with software that make jobs more efficient is a great feeling of accomplishment. Plus, when you transition into a better job in Nursing that you like you might actually use the software you helped work on and you can assist your co-workers :)

Go for it!

Specializes in Home health was tops, 2nd was L&D.

Take it! I have had both patients and computers crash on me; it's much easier to reboot a computer. And although they **** me off from time to time, I've yet to have a computer puke on my shoes or wear out the call light.
