work and school at the same time...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Good Morning all nurses!

I am a full time working nurse and just recently got into a masters of informatics program part time. I work night shift. I have no desire to go to day shift, there is less money and I was always a night owl my life. I am just very comfortable working nights. I would rather be comfortable working while I take care of my schooling. My question for you all is if there are any nurses that have done full time working nights and part time school? How was it? Some coworkers have been telling me to go to day shift.

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

I don't know the answer to this, but I am looking forward to the answer as I am interested in furthering my education as well.

do you work nights also?

Nurses have told me that working nights IS possible with part time school. It is just a little bit harder.... but I want to hear from more nurses...

Yes. Since 2001. Not just in nursing but other jobs as well.

I'm working part time nights while in school full time. It's not the easiest thing especially with daytime clinicals but it's working for the moment :)

I worked 40 hours a week in my first year of full-time nursing. I worked weekends, my one weekday off, and after school. I achieved straight As. If you really want it, like I did, then you can do it.

I am full time nights and full time school. I don't know how you could work day shift and go to school. I certainly couldn't - classes for me are M-F, starting at either 0930 or 1000 depending on the day. I would only be able to work Saturday and Sunday because all other days would interfere with class, so I'd have to cut down to part time weekend option if I wanted to work day shift.

I don't think there are many programs that have night classes that start as late as daytime nurses would need them to start. The supposed "night" programs in my area have classes starting at 1800 or so, as if anyone working a 0700-1900 could make that. :sarcastic:

You pretty much have to stay on night shift if you are going to be taking classes and you need to work full time. Unless, of course, we are talking about online programs - which don't matter at all as far as what shift you're going to work because computers don't care if it's light or dark outside.

I'll be starting in May my online graduate classes and will be working full time 3p-3a. The nice thing is I just finished studying for TCRN so I have a schedule where on my four nights off, I study between 11p-4a because I'm left in disturbed by the household. Now I know it'll be different with my masters level work, but my plan is to do the same thing.

Thanks so much for the advice !! all the replies made me feel so much better about my decision... I HAVE to continue full time night shift for money/life. School will have to be part time at this point in my life... Didn't know there were so many people doing the same/did the same... and have succeeded, makes me feel that much more better! =] =] =] KEEP IT COMING!

BTW, not online program, you will have to show up in person for this masters program..
