Hospital job - 3 twelve hr shifts (day or night) with a nice shift diff for nights/weekends
OR
Doctors office job - Mon-Fri 830-530 with one hour lunch, less pay by a couple dollars an hour and no shift diff.

I would rather have the hospital job. I have never been a fan of working 5 days a week.
My dream nursing job would be working on an inpatient unit in a childrens hospital. I have always wanted to work in pediatrics.

hospital shift for sure! I have done the 8-5 for too many years. I found this schedule difficult to attend doctors/dentist, etc appts without taking time off. It was hard to go to the gym. With the hospital schedule, you are not limited to days, weekdays, etc.

I definitely pick the 3-12's. I did 3-12s, nights, and then switched to a clinic position that was M-F 8-5. I was bored to tears, felt like I was losing my nursing skills, it was monotonous, and hated not having time off during the week to get errands done and make appts. Not only that, I hated the office politics; there was no where to go to hide when the sparks started to fly. In the hospital setting, there's not much time to get caught up in the drama and when it starts, you can always spend extra time w/ your patients.
My dream job.... not sure yet!

The hospital job. The hours and shift differences are a nice incentive. Plus, it wouldn't bore me as much as a doctor's office would.

These responses make me feel even better about my decision :) I got my license last September (RN), and started working at a doctors office as my first job. Hospitals weren't hiring, but I kept on applying. I finally spoke with a nurse recruiter, and 2 days later had an interview at the hospital on day shift. I got offered the job just a couple days later! I'm very nervous but sooo excited at the same time. I was really bored at the clinic, and I think I may enjoy the self scheduling of 3-12's. I think I need to put my time in at the hospital, so it'll open more doors up for me later on. The clinic might be nice again, but much later in life for me.

I'll take 3 12s at night on a unit that is always staffed appropriately.

Neither for me. I do not like the hospital environment (staffing, catty behavior,etc.). I think a doctors office would be hmmm...not fun. LOL
I am not sure what my dream job is, but I do know I would like to volunteer or work at a free clinic for those who do not have insurance, etc. I would also like to work with the homeless. I had a chance to do so a few months ago, but the pay was so very low. I have to have a certain amount of money. Maybe another chance will come along with better pay.
