A few months ago, I cared for a 25 year old female who coded on the operating room table after getting an analgesic shot in the eyeball for Lasik surgery. I cared for her in LTAC after a few weeks of being unresponsive (forgot the Glasgow coma scales I gave her). Yes she had hypothyroidism, hypertension, and brittle diabetes, but to have such a violent reaction to a little shot that millions of people get every year... that's a freak occurence.

Anyone else have similar stories of incredibly rare occurences?

Dermoid cyst. I was in an OR observation for removal of an ovarian cyst, and out comes this huge lump with hair and skin. I knew it was going to be weird when the doc doing the surgery said, "What the H****!!!!" The pt was so obese, they knew she had a cyst but couldn't get a good visual on what to expect from the ultrasound. It was the size of a baseball.

I had nightmares about that thing rolling across the floor after me, I mean, it was absolutely freaky. *Shudder*

i don't know if this would be considered "freak" but it's the only time i've ever seen something like this.

yrs ago i had a hospice pt who had a chronic, stage IV ulcer on her ankle.

she had had wound consults galore, and over the yrs, had every conceivable treatment.

but the best anyone could ever do, was to maintain it and prevent it from getting worse.

never showed any signs of healing.

when she started actively dying (stoking, unconscious, mottling etc) i called all involved family.

at some point, i proceeded to change her dsg.

when i removed the old bandages, her ulcer was COMPLETELY healed.

i got my nm and we just stood there, in total awe and shock.

she died within the hour.

definitely an unexplainable event...

and one i will never, ever forget.

This just happened to me a few nights ago.....

Had a very confused pt, very restless in bed. Was three rooms down with my other pt when all of a sudden I hear "He's out of bed! He's on the floor!" I run out of my other pts room to see what's going on and as I'm going this short distance, I see the rubber part of a foley catheter, balloon inflated, in the walkway outside the patients door. Didn't put two and two together, just saw that it was strange.

So my pt ended up climbing over the siderail, on his knees, facing the middle of the bed, blood around him. Come to find out the blood was from him pulling out his foley during the fall. BUT HOW DID IT END UP IN THE HALLWAY?!!! My charge nurse's theory, it must have sling shot across the room and out the door. My theory is that the inflated balloon must have helped it bounce another 10 ft. You can't make this stuff up!
