For nursing students: Once you become a Nurse, which field of nursing would you want to work in??

For nurses: What do you feel is the best and worst place to work in as a nurse... and why?

I'll start it off... When I pass the boards and become a nurse I'd like to work in the I.C.U., Peds, O.R. and maybe E.R.

I love cardiothoracic surgery, best place I have ever worked. Worst was sub actue aged care rehab. Most were waiting for nursing home placement. Having to do medications for 15 pt, doing personal care for 4 pt, attending meetings and assisting in physio while being team leader, not fun.

i say pediatric nursing rocks! i work in a childrens hospital and i love it!

Specializes in ICU, theatres, cardiology.

As a fairly new graduate i think ICU is a fab place to gain the knowledge and skills to work in any department. Although frightening at first, it gets better and you have a lot more autonomy and make decisions based on your own assessments. Also, having only one patient is fulfilling as you get to understand and know them really well. I'd recommend rotating through general, cardiac and neuro ICU so you gain an insight to all areas.....it will only make you a better nurse. Good luck and happy nursing whatever you choose.

I just graduated last week and will be starting in the ICU soon!! I was so excited to be hired directly into the ICU, since so many people told me they wouldn't hire GN's. I also looked into peds and the ER, but neither of those hire GN's in my area. I could not see myself doing LTC or regular med-surg. Congratulations to all my fellow new grads!!:biggringi

i want to work in psych. i have NO desire to be in OB or peds

Specializes in Med/Surg, Nurse Educator..

best place to work..-ER and ICU;)

teaching 4 now....-i love it!!;)

worst place to work..-med.ward:devil:

Hey guys, I was just wondering if everyone could explain what some of the terms you are using mean. For instance what is a GI nurse? I am starting pre-nursing classes in a couple of weeks and I am trying to figure out the best place to work. It surprises me how many people like the ER (I know that one). I am just curious what some of the other terms stand for.

Thanks,

Chelsea

I have worked on a SCI Rehab unit for several years and I love it. I started as a student extern, then new grad and Assistant Nurse Manager. I am currently Nurse Manager and even though I sometimes get frustrated all in all I love my job. I know that management is not for everyone but I like developing programs, advocating for my staff and feeling like I make a difference for both staff and patients. The M-F day shift schedule with weekends/holidays off is hard to come by in nursing and so that is definitely a plus. I have also done home healthcare and that was a nice part-time job as well. Everybody has their own niche so you'll find yours. The beauty of nursing is that the possibilities are endless!;)

worst place to work..-med.ward:devil:

Can you expand on why the worst place to work is the med.ward? I have some idea but would love to read the reasons for your statement.

Specializes in Geriatrics.

When I finish school, I'm hoping to do Hospice or SOMETHING with the Dying if not Hospic in particular. If I don't do that, I can see myself staying in Geriatrics like I am now. I know I don't freak out when I'm with people who are dying, and I'm currently in Geriatrics, so that is what has given me some direction in a choice.

Who knows, though? Clinicals start for me in the Spring of 2007. Maybe by the time I get out of school, I'll find that some other area fits me better...

Pediatric oncology for me.

have worked forensic (secure hospitals) for 5 years & still love it as its never boring. Might go into substance misuse nursing as i have a diploma in that too & thats different every day
