For nursing students: Once you become a Nurse, which field of nursing would you want to work in??

For nurses: What do you feel is the best and worst place to work in as a nurse... and why?

I'll start it off... When I pass the boards and become a nurse I'd like to work in the I.C.U., Peds, O.R. and maybe E.R.

I have only had the experience of working with the elderly. Definitely not what I want to continue to do when I finish school, but for now it pays the bills. It has its pros though. You can learn a lot from your residents and hear great stories and the Dementia unit can be interesting to work at times. I wouldn't stay in geriatrics though because it's sad to see how the res. are treated by some people, and I just don't feel appreciated enough. I know we are doing good helping the elderly but for me it's not enough. I want to feel like I'm really making a difference, and that's something I don't get working in nursing home/assisted living settings. When I finish school I'd like to work the newborns, hospice or like a childrens cancer/hospice unit. Something about helping people in their dying stages brings out the nurturing side in me. I have not had the experience of working in a hospital so I'm not sure what else I would like to do.

I'd like to work in Pediatrics/ NICU... I have a long way to go yet though...

I am a prenursing student... and i always assumed i would like to work on peds. However, then i got a job in a hospital as a dietary aide, and was put on the peds floor to deliver the trays. I was there all day, and at the end of the day, I realized i was almost in tears. And i was only delivering food!!!..... So maybe peds isnt my calling.

Since that day, i have no idea which field i would like to be a part of. I guess i will figure it out as time goes on...... Right?:nurse:

Any area of nursing has the potential to either be on the worst or best list. It all depends on staffing, nurse to pt ratio, resources, and whether or not mgmt is supportive and has a clue.

i think the worst place for me would be anything with children. dont get me wrong, i love children but taking care of really sick children just breaks my heart. OR or ICU sounds really great, but i think my passion would be in education. i love teaching the RN students who come to our facility for clinicals.

by the year 2020, the us will need 1.2 million new RNs. we need more educators.

I work at a hospital in the Netherlands on a SCU (Stroke Care Unit). I'm working here for over 5 years now. Recently I switched to the other side of the unit. At this side there are patients with braintumors, MS, Parkinson... I like it a lot, but I want to work at a ER / ICU because of the experience that I need when I want to work in the USA.

I've worked LTC, oncology, med surg and detox. I worked psych for 7 yrs in an emergency room setting. The stories I could tell! I currently work as a hospice nurse. My "job" is really a calling - a ministry of sorts. The miracles I've seen - would likely be called coincidences by a majority of people. OH - the stories I could tell!

Yes to this. It just depends on what you like. I used to think I would love to work Peds. But after being pulled there a few times, I hate it. But I absolutely love NICU (where I work now). You also couldn't pay me to work OB. I would do adult ICU or telemetry over Peds or OB. But my first love is NICU.

I am a pre-nursing student and I am pretty sure that I either want to work in Peds or OB. Working in a children's hospital would be a dream come true for me! :yeah:

Just finished my 1st year in ER here in Italy and absolutely love it.

But I agree with Valerie ;)
