What Do You Love About Your Job?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I recently found out I was accepted into an ADN program. I am so excited! I've wanted to be a nurse for what seemed like forever, so I'm happy that my dreams are coming true. I have read a lot of posts about why people dont like their job or whats tough about it etc etc. I understand that all jobs have pros and cons.

So the question that I'm asking is what do you love about your job? what area of nursing do you work in and what is your title? Do you like the area where you work? How long does it take you to get to work? what are you hours like? Are you happy with the money you make? What are some things that has happened that made you feel accomplished at work? etc.

Sorry so many questions and no you dont need to answer them all if you don't want but I would love to hear the positive aspects of your job.

Thanks !

On good days everything. On bad days everything................

I graduate in 14 days! WooHoo! I'm doing my preceptorship in the ED, where I am also hired on to work after graduation. I LOVE my job because I get to see some of the coolest things, I get to learn something new every day, and it is a constant challenge for me to be faster and more accurate in my assessments and interventions. The atmosphere is astounding!

I work about 10 minutes from my house. I will be an RN. I will be working in a brand new hospital in a convenient, busy part of a small city. My hours for the first 4 months of orientation will be days- 7a-7p. After that I switch to night shift- 7p-7a. I will be starting out at $22 an hour plus differentials. When I switch to nights I'll be making approx $25.30 including my 15% differential. After orientation I will be eligible for overtime, which starts at $33 an hour.

I already feel accomplished because in my first 3 weeks in the department I have had a successful code, assissted with 2 intubations, helped load a patient up to fly to a different facility, seen a partial amputation, seen a woman with a blood sugar of 1038 walk herself into the department and ask for a coke while she was waiting to be seen...I'm just amazed that I've had this opportunity to see these amazing things and learn from them!

Hm. I love the challenge. As a new grad, every single work day was exhausting, and stretched my knowledge to its limits in some way or other. Physically I had to get busy and get fitter, and I lost 16 pounds in a couple of months and have mostly kept it off.

I love the fact that I can support my family working 3 days a week. We're not rich, but we're conscientious with our budget so it's working fine.

I love the fact that I meet some patients once in a while, who touch my heart and leave a smidgen of their goodness on my soul. I enjoy learning how to interact with people, period, when I used to be a really shy person.

I really like the autonomy of being able to organize my own work routine. No two nurses do the exact same things in the exact same order on any given shift. I'm not completely my own boss... I know my role, but it does feel good to be somewhat in control of my practice.

I love learning the scope of things I can do to help problems, while assessing the patient, etc. prior to calling the doc for more orders. It's great to have a whole truckload of "tricks up my sleeve" for specific types of complaints.

As of this week I work in a tiny little ICU, and after 1 and 1/2 years of running my feet off in a tele unit, I'm enjoying the pace. I am ready for busy, wild, crazy nights when they do happen- lord knows I can handle that in spades- but I'm looking forward to some nights of a little less craziness. We'll see what we will see, but so far, I'm taking a big, deep breath and it's good. I am not allergic to work, but a body can only handle so much of a breakneck pace before a break is badly needed. I want to be a nurse for at least 20 years, not 3.

Specializes in ER, Occupational Health, Cardiology.

I do Telephone Triage for a Cardiology practice with many MDs in the practice. I love the autonomy in the job,and the respect of the MDs and Clinical Staff that I work with daily. I love the variety of calls that we get, and that not only do I determine if they need to seen in our office or the ER, I often get the opportunity to do patient teaching to pts and/or their families. I especially love no nights or weekends, after 24 years in Nursing! One thing never changes-no matter where you work, when the Full Moon rolls around, people get cranky. But, that is only once a month.;)

Congratulations on your acceptance. I remember that feeling! It is awesome to anticipate the beginning of the profession you've always dreamed of! Good luck!

I love making scared people feel safe. I love the people I work with including almost all the docs. I love being in demand for jobs. I love the flexibility and the many career paths nursing can take. I love knowing I make people feel better most of the time and can help people who are having a horrible day feel a little better, safer, less quilty, stronger.

Specializes in cardiac.

I am a registered nurse on a cardiac unit. It takes me about 10 minutes to get to work. I work at a well respected hosptial in this area. I love my facility. Everyone exhibits a positive attitude and everyone is a team player. That is extremely important to me. I like my job because you never know what is going to come at you on that particular shift. (I get bored easy) I like the challenge of it. I always leave work feeling as if I accomplished something therefor, I feel like I have a fullfilling job. I like the interactions with my pts. Good and bad. I do my best to make sure that they recieve the best care that I can possible give. And if that means staying late, then it's ok. This is my dream job and this is what I went to school for. To make a difference. Even if it's only a little one. Good Luck in your studies!!!!

Specializes in Geriatrics.

I am an LPN in geriatrics and love it!! I love the fact that we have the same residents every day, the bonds that i have been able to create with them is something truly special!!! I have been a nurse for almost a year and half, worked as a CNA for 17 years prior to going to lpn school.

Good luck to you!!!

I love the flexibility of nursing, the hours and the ability to switch jobs and do something completely different i.e. floor nursing to home health (two different worlds) now Radiology, also completely different. Medical Imaging Critical Care RN. Hours are 7:30 to 5:30 3 days per week. I make $31.00 an hour and yes I am happy with it.
