What disorders did you diagnose yourself with in Nursing School?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have to give credit to a great Allnurses.com member "Been There, Done That," for inspiring this thread. After reading that great thread, . . . It hit me! Lol, I thought back to Nursing School.

BTDT was totally correct, after being sick off and on my first year of nursing with my first case of the Flu, late life chicken Pox (I was 19!), and a case of Laryngitis I never again got sick. I guess the bugs really did strengthen my immune systems past the normal "non-clinical-population."

But now, what about Nursing School during the Disease Processes, or just Nursing School in general! How many symptoms looked just like some horrid disease process? Now, I know we can't and shouldn't even try to diagnose disease, conditions, or disorders (although I know we are guilty of this in our heads and diagnosing ourselves).

What Diseases/Disorders did YOU think you might have in Nursing School?

Bostons List: DM/Hypothyroidism/ADD/IBS or Crohns/

Alzheimers/General Anxiety Disorder/OCD

Insomnia/and of course: Pyschosomatic Hypochondrias

I'm still to shy to list the group from Grad School, that list is "G" Rated. LOL! But, Thank goodness, it was temporary too!:D

Lol, No, I have never been Medically diagnosed with any of these, but you catch my drift. . . What did you "Temporary Illness" did you suffer from as a student?

Specializes in ICU.

MRSA wound right on my shin. Still have the scar.

Specializes in OB (with a history of cardiac).

It was my son I diagnosed with everything. When he was around, gosh, maybe 10 or 11 months he was in for a fever of unknown origin (so of course I was SURE it was leukemia...no toddler runs a 102 degree fever for nothing, especially toddlers in DAY CARE!) the doc told us he heard our son's "Little Tyke Heart Murmur" I didn't know he had a murmur...what do you mean he has a murmur? Is it really loud? What grade is it? Does he need to see a cardiologist? IS HE GOING TO DIE?!!!

Naturally two days later we started PEDS CARDIAC DISORDERS. And Dr. Mommy diagnosed him with Tetralogy of Fallot- after all, he would from time to time squat and turn violet...a few times a day! I conveniently dismissed the fact that shortly after his "tet-spells" there would be a malodorous smell from his backside.

He has also had "meningitis" (again, why would he have a fever of 102 and nothing else?!)

In my defense however, I correctly diagnosed each and every case of OM he had. And I also diagnosed my daughter's pneumonia before I even took her in. But of course when your child screams and grabs his ears when you lay him down...you have to wonder if something is up. And if your child had a temp 6 days ago, and a little cold, and it went away and then came back hard core, and she's wheezing now and has shaking chills and diminished breath sounds....you have to wonder...

I myself am scared to DEATH of C-diff- if I got it, I can guarantee the whole fam would get it. I also understand that it can be spread from people to animals (and visa versa) so therefore it would be two adults, a 3 year old, a 15 month old and two cats all pooping...and we have one bathroom. *NIGHTMARRRE!*

Borderline personality disorder

On top of everything aforementioned, I diagnosed myself with Bipolar disorder, Anorexia/bulimia and Schizophrenia. Seriously for a while I thought I was full blown bipolar and I was so scared.

Hypertension, UTI, Anxiety, Depression, Female problems that will end up needing surgery.

MomRN, lol about the c-diff. I was just doing that to myself yesterday.

Specializes in NICU, OB/GYN.

PE.

Turned out later that, while I didn't have a PE (thank God), I actually am a thrombophiliac :|.

During mental health, I diagnosed myself with a lot of disorders. The one I think is most accurate is generalized anxiety disorder. Second most accurate could be clinical depression.

DVTs, ALS and every blood dyscrasia in the book

Specializes in LTC Rehab Med/Surg.

It was never me. It was my poor children. I was sure they were going to have some awful disease. Every symptom was significant.

Even drug one of them to the ER convinced they had a SBO.

Specializes in Neuroscience.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Depression, Hypertension, Peripheal Artery Disease, Pre-diabetes, GERD, Constipation (pretty sure I do have that one thanks to NS - TMI)!

Anxiety, Breast cancer (is that a lump, nope just a regular boob:D) DVT, PE, arthritis, ectopic pregnancy, colon cancer, hyperthyroidism, OCD (this is true, well from my expert opinion), abdomenal aortic anerysm, peripheral vascular disease (cold feet...has to be PVD right?) raynauds syndrome (cold hand disease yea?) Brain tumor, and probably more if I could remember.
