Ugh!!! "60% of base pay..."

Okay, so I had back surgery two weeks ago, and I'm off work for a while. I'll be going back to work in about four weeks, but I will most likely still only be part time. But, that's another worry for another post. Anyway...

Stupid me JUST found out this morning that my short term illness, i.e "sick time" is ONLY 60 percent of my base pay!! Meaning that my next couple of paychecks will be roughly half of what I usually make. =(

Is this pretty standard everywhere? Because the last two places that I worked... both hospitals... I had babies during both of those stints, took off six-eight weeks, and I could SWEAR that I was making the same pay, minus my shift diff of course.

Just curious...

As far as I know, the calculate it at 60% of base pay because taxes and insurance aren't being taken out, so, supposedly, your checks should be similar to what they'd be if you were working. Of course, who really looses 40% of their pay to taxes and insurance?

I know that my disability would be 75% of what I normally make. It is good to pay attention when you're going over your benefits.

I was on short-term disability for stress leave back in 2004, and was receiving 60 percent of my gross pay. Since no deductions for taxes or insurance were being taken from my disability checks, it felt as if I was receiving full pay.

In my opinion, 60 percent is better than zero.

This is standard . . . I've been through 3 surgeries in the last 4 yrs. I wish you a speedy recovery.

We have the option to have 50% , 60%, or pay a little more into the std bennies and have 70%. I did the 60%. Felt pretty much like full pay for me as well.

I just went back to work after having 3 months off for ankle surgery and I was getting 67% of my pay. but, I had them take out some for taxes so I wouldn't be scoked at the end of the year.

Another reminder, when you go back they will want the insurance premiums that you missed while off. See if you can make arragements to pay two per check instead of them taking it out all at once.

I agree. For the past ten years, I've worked jobs that offered zero benefits. Fewer employers are offering benefits, including short-term disability. I'd try to be grateful that the benefit is there at all.

We have to pay for short-term disability, but long-term is provided. It begins when you've been out of work 3 months and it's 60% of your pay. Believe me, when I finally started receiving that check I was sooooo relieved!!

Also, we're required to pay our health insurance premium to the hospital while out on leave. That is until you have to start paying COBRA....ouch!!

Back in 1994 (in the financial field) I had 60% base pay for short-term disability. It began after all sick time was used and lasted for 90 days. I was happy to get it. This was a small company of about 35 employees. We had good benefits & we didn't have to pay our premiums while on S/T disability.
