Too many Negative remarks regarding Nursing School here!! Stop the discouragement!!

  1. I can already imagine what responses I'll get....But anyway...I and im sure, alot of other people who are pursuing a degree in Nursing are tired of some of the remarks that are made on this site regarding Nursing school! It's already stressful for many of us who are trying to get into a program and to hear such things like " when will this end," "15 people dropped out of my Nursing class last semester!!,"etc makes it even more stressful for us! Nursing school is not easy , but Im sure it's not "Hell." I have known many people who applied and got accepted into Nursing school with a 2.7.Uhmmmm, thats "pretty average Joe" to me and hey, they're pretty good Nurses now.

This is a place for nurses to vent. If you don't like certain threads, don't read them. It is not our obligation to watch every word we say for fear that someone may be discouraged.

Those of us who are nurses get tired of students telling us to watch our coments.

I am in no way flaming you, but I just hope you realize that many of these complaints are vents from people who have no one around to say this to. If I were to go to my support system and say "after today I want to quit", he would encourage me to do so. When I come onto allnurses.com and say it, I get more positive than neg feedback, because they have already been through it. They understand that there is such a thing as a bad day. And after a good sleep, it will get better.

You have a right to read what you want to on here. There is no law that says you must read all posts and threads. With that said I hope you are reading this on a positive and not neg note. I hope you find a thread that really speaks to you and helps you to understand why people need to vent about school, work, pts, co-workers, drs, and anything (everything) else. And I hope that when you are in school, and the one person with the cell phone on answers it in class, you will know you can come vent here and get a support system like no where else. Have a great day. And I do believe I must say congratulations on your first vent!:blushkiss

This is a forum upon which to vent. Nursing students are doing just that---VENTING!! Sometimes those family members or friends who are supposed to be "support systems" fail us; this forum can serve that purpose when it happens.

Tell that to the people who gave up everything so that they could go to school and then fail out.

If people want to come here and vent, then so be it. Start a postive thread and only read that. Let the people who are going through 'hell' vent it here, and let us respond and help them.

Oh yes...lots of venting. But you know what else? We've all been through nursing school too. We can relate...empathize...advise...and sympathize.
Most "hard" things are worth it in the end.
Finish your job, and you'll see!

Everyone's experience is different. But I love it that I have somewhere I can come on a day where it feels like I just won't survive another one like that...and have people tell me they know how I feel. And I know that they do!!!

There is only one person in my non-nursing life that has a CLUE what nursing school is like. Most people are utterly baffled. So on a bad day I love the support I get here.

Sometimes I don't even have to post, I find someone experiencing EXACTLY the same thing and I realize I'm not alone.

So...your experience may be different. You may LOVE nursing school. If you do, I will be thrilled for you.
I can understand your frustration, you don't want any more discouragement, you don't want to have to stress about the future. But please, don't deny me and those here like me the chance to get a little support and a digital hug or two.

grin. As I tell my child when he's worried about nightmares after reading a frightening book...if the title looks scary, don't read it!

Aw, what's the fun of doing something tough if you can't complain about it a little :-).

You'll probably find when you start NS that it's nothing like you expected and really, nobody else understands except people who've gone through it. That's why this website is so great--one of the reasons anyway :-).

Getting into NS is tough, too. Good luck on getting in! It's definitely worth it (I think). But, if you want some positive things...

Your fellow students can become your new best friends
One day you'll discover you know a whole lot more than you realize
Your biceps will become very strong toting around all those heavy books
You will appreciate sleep like you never have before
You can dazzle your family, etc. with medical facts--it doesn't take much to impress...

    Besides...

    NURSES ROCK

I don't know about your program, but in mine, a student has to make a B to pass and stay in. If you miss a B by a 0.1 of a point, and you can, there is no guarantee of a spot in the class the following semester because that class is already full.

So, yeah, it's hard, and stressful, and if an Average Joe or Josephine gets in on a 2.7, they may have an even tougher time because the material ain't easy and only gets more difficult the further along you get. And then you have to participate in clinicals with nurses who just may not be thrilled to have students around, which adds another layer of stress. (That was a recent thread).

Discouraging? No. Reality of nursing school? Yes!

Good luck to you. We're in this together and wish you well ...

It is wise to refrain from going into nursing wearing a rose-colored pair of glasses. There are positive and negative aspects of nursing, and I would want to know all about the benefits and drawbacks if I were a student. It's in your best interests to read the occasional vents rather than pretend that everything is rosy about the field.

Nursing school is tough and thinking it isnt will get you into trouble. there are standards to meet and no acceptions or hand holding. Dont feel down about it just know what it will be like. You make great friends along the way and pull eachother through the pain and feel so good when you make it. Some people dont make it, actually we lost 5 out of 22 in our first quater and they say only 50% of the original students will graduate on time. Just know you can do it!

This all sounds like a nursing intervention for a psychosocial NANDA.

As always, if you dislike the content of a thread, you have every right to abstain. I would suggest this in the future if certain topics bug you. This is a site designed for all kinds of folks, professional nurses, nursing students and potential interested parties. Some will vent about their work and school. That is normal and natural.

I might also suggest that IF you are that easily discouraged, nursing school may be VERY hard for you. If I had a buck for everyone who told me things about nursing school and nursing to discourage or sway me away from it, I would not need to work. Do not listen to naysayers; if you have a goal in mind, nothing and nobody will stop you. Unless you LET them.

    Good luck in the future.
