The Wisest Thing I've Ever Heard on Allnurses ...

We have all heard some wise advice on Allnurses, or the perfect quote, or just "the sentence that sums it all up" for you.

I think my favorite is this:

"You shouldn't have to learn your (nursing) job from youtube."

This statement was in response to a new grad who'd lost her first job, and was now trying to polish her skills - partly through youtube videos. This response just cracked me up!

How about you? What's the wisest thing YOU'VE ever heard on Allnurses?

Actually, I wasn't trying to learn my skills through youtube OP - it was a suggestion - a supportive suggestion -

made to me after I lost my job during my probationary period as a new nurse. When I was in a very low

place.

You can't fix stupid? Wow.

I am not stupid.

If you are going to take the energy to make a post like this at least get the facts straight. I may

not have the experience as a brand new nurse like seasoned nurses do, but I hope I always have the

compassion to be supportive.

You were once a brand new nurse too.

And so what if I do end up watching youtube videos? At least I have the courage to dust myself off and try

again after getting punched in the stomach. At least I am not afraid of asking for help when I need it - even

at my lowest point. I don't ever want to be the type of person that has to lift myself up by pushing someone

else down even lower.

Weirdest thing I've heard? Hmm maybe when people come on here saying "no one told me that there is no nursing shortage:eek:"

It never fails to surprise me how people can go through nursing school and still never hear that they may not get a job in their desired specialty before graduation.

Or also " You mean I might have to work on a holiday if I get a job in a hospital??"

Edit: Obviously I can not read...I thought it said "weirdest" that might be an interesting thread

Wisest thing I ever read here- "Taking care of sick humans is expensive." Esme12, on health care profit margins...and the value of human lives. I keep it in mind a lot.

Actually, pretty much anything she says.

Dang, I thought this thread was going to be an awesome compendium of AN wisdom.

I passed my CNA skills test by watching the videos on Youtube. A fellow classmate of mine failed, I sent him the link to the videos and he studied them like I advised and he passed at his next attempt. I also used Youtube teaching videos to homeschool my daughter on things that I didn't think I could explain or teach to her correctly. Youtube can actually be extremely helpful if used properly.

Yes, Youtube IS actually a good source to learn from. For instance, my A & P prof, (and I use the term "prof" loosely) couldn't teach his way out of a paper bag. Most of the heavy duty material I learned from a youtube channel called Dr. Najeeb, this guy has mastered the art of teaching. I had to depend on myself and those videos to learn the material for that class. I highly recommend any nursing students in the throes of A & P to search your current topic on his channel, you will be amazed at his talent.

I most definitely should NOT have HAD to learn the material from youtube, particularly whilst paying $1k to someone else who was grossly inept.

I think the fact that the first things that come to mind as "wise advice" gleaned are negative comments like the ones above speak volumes about how nurses treat one another. Eat the young, indeed.

It was definitely tongue in cheek and inspired the thread, but I sure hope that we get more serious replies Amie! :)

Wow, when I saw this thread was up to 4 pages already, I thought to myself, what an amazing lot of wisdom there is on AN!

First off, I was not making fun of the person who posted about watching you tube videos to brush up on skills. I think it is wonderful and resourceful that they did!

It was just that the quote, and the way it was said, cracked me up so bad! (edited to add: It also made me very sad - the school should have prepared her, the employer should have prepared her!)

Anyway - as I often do, I started the thread with what I thought would be a laugh, and as I said, hoped that some more serious replies would ensue.

"You can't fix stupid" also cracked me up; it is a quote I have heard more and more often of late and I DO NOT believe it was in response to that thread! I would never have condoned such a thing!

Have you ever tried telling a joke and then had to explain it? it's no fun.

But I do apologize to the people who may have been hurt and misread its intent. SO absolutely! I have nothing but sympathy for the OP of the thread in question!! :(

So - let's start over - what ARE the wisest things you've heard on AN?

Glad you clarified this thread because just like OP's I thought you were making fun of people who watch You Tube as a tool.

Now too think of any wise posts I can't think of any now because I'm cooling down from reading all these threads. :smokin:

I will say this though, next time I read a thread I'll try my best not to take it the wrong way. :)

"You can't fix stupid" is from one of the many ED threads about dumb/weird things people come to the ED for......I wish I could remember who said it.....I know it was VIVA.

I think that "we" need to remember that not all posts that say "you" mean YOU personally it is the collective you. I think we sometimes need to put the keyboards down and back away slowly or maybe thinking twice before hitting that enter button.
