The same old battle - work vs school! Ughh..

So, I've been in hospital orientation for the new job for the last two weeks now (last day tomorrow, whooo!)

I emailed my manager today, telling about my RN-BSN classes that start at the end of the month, and that I will have class one day every other week. I had just gotten the dates before I emailed her.

She was kind of hostile about it! Basically, kind of accused me of not saying anything about school or conflicts in my interview (that was almost two months ago - but I did tell them. School is very important to me, there is no way I wouldn't mention it.). She acted kind of frustrated and disappointed (which is NEVER a good thing when starting a new job...)

I'm frustrated. They told me in the interview they had no problem working with people in school. :confused::confused: Either way, I feel bad about it, and I'm already seriously doubting my abilities to do well in this job. (as my previous post talked about...)

Ugh. Maybe my plate is too full.

I feel your pain. The only job I have been able to find is PRN/ float pool (and that isn't a sure thing yet). Every time I mention school in an interview the interviewer will clam up. :mad:

I mean, whats that all about?! I need 2 days a month off for SCHOOL, not to sit around and do internet dating or watch reruns of the Simpsons! Actually something productive - for myself and the company. Give me a break!

Good luck to you. Obviously, I feel strongly about school and I do think you can balance it and work. I worked all through RN school.

You are improving your practice by going to school, which benefits

your employer directly as well. Stick to your guns or find a job that will allow

you to go to school. Ideally, you will want an employer who will embrace

you and offer opportunities after you finish your BSN.

I feel your pain. It is hard to balance school and work, especially when your job does not support you. I was working full time nights when I had to simply switch to prn status. When I told my job that I was going back to school, they made it more difficult for me to go back by messing with my schedule. If it is important to you, then keep pressing on. Fight for it. I feel your pain. Tomorrow I have to break the news to my job. I'm not sure how they are going to take it. I don't know my clinical schedule yet so I'm really going out on the limb here. sigh-

I know! One lady had the nerve to tell me "we can't work around your schooling but when you're finished we would love to hire you". That really irked me! I am doing a LPN to RN program that would require me to miss 2 - 5 days a month. I never imagined I would have this much trouble. Another reason it bothers me is because I know my currect company has access to PRN nurses but they won't let me have a full-time position because they can't let me have off "that many Fridays"!!! There is only one month that requires me to have off every Friday. All the other months are 2-3 days a month. In 9 months I will be done.

I guess it's where you work. I'm working as a patient aide, and I told them up front that they take a backseat to college when it comes to priorities. Not only were they fine with that, but they let me tell them which days I was willing to work and they didn't blink when I told them Tues. Thu. and Sat. were the only days I could work.... maybe they were just desperate for aides... lol. Are there other places you could look for work? They should not be allowed to hold you back from bettering yourself!

I don't give my employer my school schedule. I list my availability and they don't even know I'm a student half the time.

Hmmm.....that is so interesting to me because the Dean of the ADN program I will be starting in NINETEEN DAYS:yeah:said that when I am applying for jobs (yes, I asked about and am thinking that far ahead!) to be sure to mention I was entering an RN-BSN program to assist me in getting chosen. WTH?!?!? More smoke, maybe??

I would imagine that such employers would encourage their employees to continue to higher education. Wouldn't it be more impressive that way? Well, I guess I can see how there can be scheduling conflicts and such, especially for a new job... Must be the type of company/hospital? Good luck to all of you though.

if possible see if you can work weekends? my facility offers the baylor program, work sat-sun 12hrs and one 12hr shift during the week and get paid for 40hrs? thats what i do and each schedule i can my day during the week to work with school. you would think going to further your education would make them happy?
