The Nurses Belive that I'm here to Help

This is a total bragging thread, so depart now if that will annoy you. :)

I started my informatics spot a month ago and my boss's big concern was that the nurses would see me as a hindrance rather than a help.

Well, ystdy in a meeting the subject of adding computer workstations came up. The preferred, cheapest plan was to whittle away at the nurses' station. Before anyone else said anything, I said, "The nurses can't give up any space. They're already too cramped."

Well, the nurse manager came to me today to tell me that she appreciated how supportive I was of the nurses, and that finally it feels like there' someone out there who understands. I told that it's because I am a nurse. She answered, "I know, but ift feels like you get it."

It feels good. And my boss is thrilled.

At my job, the nurses and techs have been pretty nice though a bit suspicious of my efforts to learn how they use the computer system. My goal is to make the most efficient use of the system but due to so many ridiculous and unsuccessful previous attempts, the staff are a bit wary. I'm starting to make small changes and am making sure to run things by them and let them know the rationale. I am committed to this and really think I can help the department better utilize their information system without increasing burden upon the staff. My main fear is that The Powers That Be will decide my role is an 'unnecessary luxury' and cut the position or assign me to other work that doesn't allow me to work with the info sys & staff and help improve the situation. So another goal to make sure that my efforts give the administration those ever elusive *numbers* they demand... and hopefully prove the worth of my efforts.
