I am always overcome with guilt when I call in-but I have been running a fever for 2 days now..I have called in today-but I just don't see making a 12 hour shift on a surgical telemetry unit...what would you do?(just picking brains..I know what I'm going to do)

Why should you feel guilty?

Stay home. I hope you're soon better.

there's no logical reason to feel guilty.

if you're sick then you are sick.

if you're contagious stay home...no one wants what you have.

if you have a fever...stay home.

if you think you feel too bad to give good patient care...stay home. hope you feel better soon.

If you have fever, then you are probably sick without something your patients can get. You have an obligation not to cause harm, so IMO you should not go. Nothing to feel guilty about.

Just get some rest, and don't worry about it. Like my manager told me last week: Our staffing problem is not your problem.

We're in the same boat.

I just called in tonight. I woke up this am with an earache and sore throat, feeling like a bus hit me.

Went to my doc- throat culture said strep.

I called in once last month because my son was sick, once the month before because I had strep then, too.

So, three call ins. I've been there since August.

I always go in extra when they call and need me.

But I still feel really guilty.

If you have a fever please stay home, bad help is no help at all - If you need rest then you have to take it.. Hugs feel better no worries no guilt!

I've been sick with GI trouble 5 times since October... when I get stressed, my GI goes wonky... called in 1 day with a flat tire.. and I've gotten a verbal warning... was told I can't call off again till October or else... So, I get this spiel.. and then I'm told in the next breath, if you're sick, stay home... make up your mind, people... geez...

Nope.. can't call off again till October... and if I do, I get a written warning, and then if I call off again after that, I get terminated

Is this something like IBS, etc? If your doc diagnoses a chronic condition, you can file FMLA and protect your job.
